  • Researchers Propose New Multipolar Lattices for Improved Metasurfaces

    Scientists from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have predicted a unique type of bound states in the continuum – one that is completely resistant to changes in the system parameters. This would allow researchers to control the resonance properties of metasurfaces and, eventually, to develop more efficient optical and optoelectronic devices of the next generation. The corresponding paper received special recognition from the editors of Physical Review B (Letter) and was published in the section Editor’s Suggestion.

The new testing system has already been employed to investigate the relationships between working memory and musical abilities, academic performance and behavioral problems.     The proposed model allows researchers to understand how certain substances can influence the formation and development of bone cells. This knowledge is useful both in fundamental biological research and in the creation of new ways to prevent osteoporosis and other diseases. Moreover, the model can be used to design smart wound-healing materials.

    Computers can outperform people in many fields – but, it seemed, not in the art of making jokes. ITMO University researchers decided to try and dispute this claim. This year, to celebrate April Fools’ Day they taught GPT-3, the world’s most powerful text-generating algorithm, to make jokes. Now anyone on the internet can test the results of their work.

    Staff members of the Laboratory of Quantum Processes and Measurements have found the cause of errors that occur on subcarrier frequencies in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems – as well as a way to eliminate it. Their research was published in Optics Express.

  • ITMO Researchers Win Grant for Development of Smart Glasses Components

    The scientists will develop a method for the development of waveguides invisible to the naked eye and which will make it possible to transmit images onto transparent glass and polymer surfaces. It will also be possible to use the same technology to create sensors useful in the production of protective eyewear for workers in hazardous occupations.
