Tatiana's Day: Russia Celebrates Its Students
Did you know that Russian students have a special day devoted to them? Every year, on January 25th, they celebrate Student’s Day. On this day in 1775, Empress Elizabeth signed a decree for the establishment of the first university in Russia, Lomonosov Moscow State University. Years later it became the day for all university students in the country, or “Student’s Day”. Student’s Day usually falls on the last day of exams and on the beginning of the students’ winter holidays

Feeling stressed out during exams is completely normal. In fact, it’s not always a bad thing. A bit of stress can make a person more energetic and efficient. This happens when for example, you have some serious cramming to do the night before an exam. There is also “good” stress which includes falling in love, travelling, going through change, and being a beginner. But a lot of stress, on the contrary, can interfere with exam preparation, decrease efficiency, impair your memory and communication skills. Winter School “It’s Your Call!”: Leading Experts’ Lectures, Semi-Hackathon and Chess Pong.
From January 29 to February 3, 2018 ITMO is going to host Winter School "It’s Your Call!". The winter school is intended for all the participants of the All-Russian Students' Competition "I am a Professional", which started in November 2017, and other motivated students from all over the country. Bachelor’s and Master’s students who participated in the above-mentioned competition in the fields of "Computer Science", "Information and Cyber Security" and "Photonics" will be able to take part in the Winter School. The organizers have prepared a huge program for them, which includes lectures and workshops from leading experts at ITMO, Yandex , Kaspersky Lab, Sberbank and other organizations, excursions to specialized laboratories and companies, Semi-Hackathon, Chess Pong and other activities. Applications for participation in the Winter School are accepted until January 20 inclusive.

DreamDorm.Shine Contest: Prove YOUR Room is the Best!
The DreamDorm.Shine contest has launched at ITMO University. Its goal is to encourage students to treat their dormitory with care, develop their communication skills and promote cooperation. In this endeavor they will be assisted by ITMO’s Student Dorm Council, which has recently won the second place in a city-wide competition for the best university & college student dorm council of St. Petersburg.

Russia to Launch First Educational Media-Project on Cancer Prevention
Cancer prevention foundation “Ne naprasno” (its name translates as "Not in vain" from Russian - Ed.) won a Presidential grant for creating Profilaktika.Media - an educational media project on evidence-based medicine and oncology. Two Master’s students of ITMO’s Science Communication Program are responsible for this project: Ksenia Zhirnova and Elizaveta Dubovik. ITMO.NEWS spoke with these students and found out what it's all about: namely, what is cancer prevention; why there are still so many misconceptions about cancer in Russia; how such a media project could help cancer patients, as well as improve doctors’ training.

KronBars Named Best Russian Student Sports Club Second Year In Row
Results of the competition for the title "Best Student Sports Club" were announced in Kazan on November 25 at the All-Russian Forum of Student Sports Clubs. KronBars, which recently came first in an all-Russian SSC rating, was recognized as the best student sports club in Russia for second year consequently.ITMO’s student sports club also won in two other nominations: "Best Awareness-building Effort" and "Best Organization"

ITMO Students Gear Up For Convoluted Machine Competition
ITMO University’s team “Arikaton” has qualified for the final stage of the Goldberg Cup, Russia’s first competition for creators of Goldberg machines – overly complicated contraptions that perform simple tasks. The team will present a machine that displays the movie “IT”, decorated in the film’s style. The competition values unique construction and unusual visual style of the machines. Its mission is to encourage young people to think creatively, build things and approach ordinary tasks from new angles.

ITMO Master's Student on Creating Virtual Museums and Getting Motivated
IT technologies have long become an integral part of medicine, finance, city planning and other areas. They are making their way into arts, too. Russia’s oldest theatres present multimedia plays, and, soon enough, museums will allow their visitors to hear the sounds of musical instruments that have long been held behind glass cases. Yulia Trushina helped implement the latter concept; in collaboration with a team from St. Petersburg State University, she helped create a virtual museum that brings to life musical instruments of old – and presented the project to one of the city’s museums. This year, Yulia has enrolled at ITMO University on the Master’s degree program “Multimedia Technologies in Theater, Cinema and Television.” In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Ms. Trushina discussed what makes multimedia more interesting than classical art, why designers need to be good at math and how students can make the most of their newfound skills even in the course of their studies.

TADHack 2017: ITMO Students Finish Third with Tourism App
Students from ITMO University’s Computer Technologies Department have won third place at the St. Petersburg event of the Telecom Application Development Hackathon (TADHack), which was held in more than 30 cities around the world from September 22 to 24. The competition requires participants to develop telecommunications software. More about the event and ITMO team’s project below.

ITMO. Future Careers: Employment Offers for ITMO Students
ITMO University recently hosted the Future Careers job fair where the university's students could get to know the different companies they can continue their careers in. After a similar event in April, each of the participating companies collected information on about 100 potential employees that they are ready to hire.
