  • Urban Environment as a Learning Laboratory

    School is one of the most conservative educational structures in Russia. To solve this problem, Anastasia Rossinskaya, a PhD in pedagogical sciences and leading research associate at the Laboratory for Sociocultural Educational Practices of the Institute of System Projects at Moscow City University, proposes to stop expecting radical changes and focus on modern educational formats instead. The researcher held a workshop for St. Petersburg’s teachers, called “City as a Student Book”, where she shared about how to help school students familiarize themselves with their cities and what they can learn on their way home from school.

  • How Games are Changing Education

  • ITMO University and Huawei Discuss Advancement of Scientific Cooperation and Joint Development of Startups

    For several years now, ITMO University and the company Huawei have been cooperating on scientific research and organization of internships for the university’s staff and students. However, the partners see opportunities for expanding this cooperation in a number of fields, including the training of talents, support of ITMO University’s research, development of startups and integration of technologies created at the university into the company’s products. The administration of ITMO has recently met with the representatives of the company to discuss these promising prospects.

  • ITMO University to Participate in a New Program for the Development of Student Volunteering

    According to the statistics, the average age of a volunteer in Russia amounts to 22-27 years old. The development of the volunteering movement at universities and vocational education institutions is becoming one of the priority tasks for the nearest future. As set forth in the national project “Education”, the number of student volunteers will have reached 2.8 million by 2020 and 8.8 million by 2024. To help educational organizations in this endeavor, in April of 2019 the Association of Volunteer Centers (AVC) launched the program “Our People”. ITMO University joined the list of the participants.

    At the recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF’19), speakers discussed not just economics but also how the agenda of Russian education plays into the country’s general social environment. During one of the discussions, experts in the field of education expanded on such topics as the achievements and problems of the state’s educational system in the past ten years, the advantages and drawbacks of educational selectivity, whether the profession of a teacher is really necessary, and why Soviet-style broad education is no longer efficient. We wrote down the highlights of the discussion.

  • Council for the Development of Digital Economy at ITMO University: Online Education and Russian Universities in Global Top-50

    On March 26, ITMO University hosted the third session of the Council for the Development of Digital Economy at the Federation Council of the Russian Federation. At the center of discussion was the topic “Human Capital as the General Asset of Digital Economy”. The event’s speakers and participants discussed the training and retraining of human resources in the framework of the Digital Economy national program. Particular attention was paid to the issue of regional involvement in the development of human capital for the digital economy, as well as providing Russian citizens with opportunities for lifelong study and avoiding the risks related to the automation of economy.

  • 'All We Have to Do is Work Harder': Head of ITMO's Science and Technology Foresight on Bett-2019

    School-level education is becoming increasingly more interactive and appealing to children. VR, AR and other technologies help get the students more involved and offer them knowledge of different subjects. Experts discussed these and other trends at Bett-2019, a major annual trade show dedicated to the use of hi-tech in education that takes place in London. Svetlana Kochkaeva, a manager at ITMO's Center for Science and Technology Foresight, attended the event and speaks about the field's novelties and the practices that Russia has yet to employ.
