• Science Museums and Talent Development: Third Forum of Science Communicators at ITMO

  Last week, ITMO University hosted the third Forum of Science Communicators. Organized by the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the event brought together science journalists, science communicators, media relations officers, and researchers. • Data Science for Culture, Toxicity, and New Perception of Time: Researchers of New Media Discuss Trends in Digital World

  Last week, an open plenary discussion on data, digitized culture and digital society took place as part of the interdisciplinary conference EVA 2019 and the Information Society and Technology Week. Experts in the field of Digital Humanities discussed new research projects and challenges. The event’s special guest was Lev Manovich, a theoretician of new media and digital culture and a professor of Computer Science at City University of New York.

• White Nights Forum Experts on Combating Pseudoscience in Medicine

  Last weekend, the international oncological forum White Nights took place in St. Petersburg. For the second year in a row, ITMO University’s Science Communication Center has taken part in the event, where, together with the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology, it organized a session on the reasons why pseudoscientific methods are being used to treat oncological diseases (this year’s session was timed with the launch of a new biomedical specialization in ITMO’s Science Communication Master’s program). The problem was discussed by leading national and international experts in the field of communication, sociology and medicine.

• Areas of Growth in Russian Master’s Studies: Transformation of Programs and Ecosystem-Building

  Is there a future for the established Master’s programs created dozens of years ago? What is a university ecosystem and how is it formed? How to measure the institutional environment? And what are the potential areas of growth for regional universities? These questions were discussed as part of the third and last day of the “Master’s Degree ++” conference that has recently concluded in St. Petersburg. The conference was organized by ITMO University together with the Vladimir Potanin Foundation and brought together experts from leading Russian and international universities and winners of the 2018-2019 Potanin scholarship contest for educators.

• Green Campuses and Recycling: Sustainable Development by Youth International Forum at ITMO

  Last week, ITMO University hosted the Sustainable Development by Youth International Educational Forum. Organized by students of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, the forum is aimed at introducing the youth to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. At the forum’s plenary session, its participants discussed the role of universities in the promotion of the SDGs, as well as the issue of solid waste recycling in St. Petersburg.

  80,000 IT specialists graduate from Russian universities each year, but even this is far from enough to cover the market’s demand.
