• Dr. Carlos Cabal From University of Havana on the Future of MRI

  Prof. Cabal’s research group from the University of Havana, Cuba, learned to build their own magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners thirty years ago – back then, those were the only available MRI machines in the country. Today, Dr. Carlos Cabal is one of leading MRI experts with a long history of successful collaboration with ITMO University. Starting 2016, the researcher has been delivering a specialized course for future physicists twice a year and soon, he will join the university’s school of MRI as one of the keynote speakers. In this article, Prof. Cabal shares his views on the future of MRI and explains why he thinks ITMO has all the potential to break new grounds in this field.

• ITMO Scientists Develop Nanostructured Temperature Indicator Based on Carbon Dots and Nanocellulose

  Researchers from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster and University of Toronto discovered a nonlinear dependence of photoluminescence of carbon dots on the composition of a water and dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. The color of the same dot sample changes depending on the polarity of solvent it is placed in. Thanks to this discovery, the researchers were able to develop a portable wide-range (from -68°C to +19°C) temperature indicator, which can be used to control the storage conditions of chemical, pharmaceutical, and food products.

• Heritage Science at ITMO: Collaboration With Russian Museum and French Colleagues

  The Heritage Science Lab was established at ITMO in 2020 after the corresponding megagrant application was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. Chosen to lead the new research unit was Olga Smolyanskaya, an associate professor at the Faculty of Photonics. Studying Russian art alongside her are ITMO scientists and students, as well as leading French specialists in cultural heritage studies: Michel Menu and Vincent Detalle. • ITMO University Signs Partnership Agreement With Kazakhstan’s Center for International Programs

  ITMO University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kazakhstan-based Center for International Programs. According to the document, students from Kazakhstan will have the opportunity to study at the university as part of the international program Bolashak. In addition, ITMO will expand its academic and scientific collaborations with Kazakhstan’s universities.

• The Future of MRI: ITMO Researchers Develop New Ways to Acquire and Analyze MR Images

  Last year, ITMO’s International Laboratory of Applied Radioengineering was successfully selected for a Megagrant for research into the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Their goal is to make this method more efficient, convenient, and safe. This project entails the development of new devices as well as methods of producing and analyzing MR images that will help clinicians make their diagnoses swiftly and accurately. David Bendahan, a leading French scientist and one of the heads of the project, told us about the milestones achieved in the past year and the challenges of communicating with clinicians.

• ITMO Researchers Generate Laser Radiation in Anapole Modes

  ITMO University researchers in collaboration with scientists from the Australian National University and Korea University have demonstrated the generation of laser radiation in anapole states (modes) for the first time. In the future, this might help develop compact sources of laser radiation such as lab-on-a-chip devices.

• ITMO Scientists Enhance Multiphoton Processes in Perovskite Metasurfaces

  Researchers placed a polymer on a thin perovskite film and, using lithography, created a metasurface consisting of prolonged parallelepipeds. In the future, this will help create highly efficient visualizers for infrared radiation.
