Track the Growth of Scoliosis using Mathematical Models
Musculoskeletal system diseases do not only worsen the quality of life but they can also lead to other diseases, including cardiovascular ones. Scoliosis is one of the most common musculoskeletal system diseases. Researchers from ITMO’s Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials and Department of Advanced Mathematics together with the Ogonek Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology Center (Strelna), headed by Mikhail Dudin, are working on a physical and mathematical model of scoliosis that will help doctors more accurately diagnose the disease.

Climate Change: Future Challenges for Urban Scientists
This end of February has become St. Petersburg’s coldest in the past several decades. According to Alexander Kolesov, Chief Meteorologist at the Northwest Center of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, we last had such cold weather back in 1955. Europe experienced a drop in temperature as well; actually, the recent cyclone even got a nickname, the Beast from the East. So, what is happening to the climate, and how will these global changes affect St. Petersburg? During a lecture at the Institute of Design & Urban Studies, Artem Pavlovsky, climatologist and member of the State Research and Design Center of St. Petersburg Master Plan, talked about the reasons behind climate change, and its effect on the development of urban territories.

ITMO University Opens Educational Courses on BIM Technologies in Building and Infrastructure Design
ITMO University has launched an educational program for professional training in cooperation with OOO “Research and Development Center “Etalon””. The program is mainly dedicated to study of BIM technology. It can be used to account for all the properties and measurements of the building not only during construction, but also during its operational stage and to predict the possible faults in the structure as well as monitor its condition in real-time. By increasing their theoretical and practical knowledge through the program, specialists are able to work as BIM- managers, coordinators and modelers.
