ITMO University and Kirovsky Zavod to Cooperate on Liquefied Natural Gas Technologies
On October 4, as part of the 8th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, ITMO University and the Kirovsky Zavod Gas Technologies LLC have signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of education and scientific-technological activities. CEO Vladimir Korobeynikov signed the agreement on behalf of Kirovsky Zavod, while ITMO University was represented by Igor Baranov, head of the School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems.

Joel Rodrigues from Brazil’s National Institute of Telecommunications: on Internet of Things, Its Biggest Challenges and Goals
In August 2018, three research organizations published their reports on development prospects in the market of industrial Internet of Things. According to the latest Market Research Engine report, the volume of the global IoT market will pass 176 billion USD by 2022. Meanwhile, Juniper Research report that the number of connected IoT sensors and devices will amount to 21 billion in 2018, and 50 billion by 2022. Joel Rodrigues, a professor of the National Institute of Telecommunications (Brazil) and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, discussed the future of this industry, as well as its issues, with the staff and students of ITMO University. For the past several years, Professor Rodrigues has worked together with researchers from ITMO on several initiatives. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about his work and the IoT’s potential to change the global economy.

ITMO’s Opportunities at French-Russian University
ITMO University became a participant of the French-Russian University (FRU), a consortium that unites more than eight leading French and Russian universities. The project’s goal is to create a barrier-free space for academic cooperation and training the staff of international companies. Participation in the consortium allows the universities to establish educational and research partnership, to organize academic exchange programs and summer schools as well as to initiate joint research projects.

ITMO and Partners Present New Projects at 2nd Lasers&Photonics Congress
From June 4-8, St. Petersburg hosted the second international Lasers&Photonics congress, which brought together 1,500 scientists, researchers and members of the industry in the fields of photonics, laser physics and quantum communications. One of the main events at the congress was an exhibition where companies from Russia, Belarus, Lithuania and Japan presented their products; ITMO University, too, showcased devices developed in cooperation with industrial partners. Holographic nanocomposite materials, Li-Fi devices, infrared sensors for high-speed fiber optic communications – these and other inventions are market-ready.

Last week representative of ITMO University met with Mauro Dell'Ambrogio, Switzerland’s State Secretary for Education, Research, and Innovation. During the meeting, ITMO University and the Swiss delegation discussed plans for closer collaboration between the university and its Swiss counterparts.

ITMO University Revamps its Master’s Program in Optoelectronics
ITMO University’s Master’s program in Optoelectronics is ready for a fresh start starting from the next academic year. Cutting edge technologies and on-the-job experience will be the focus of the new educational program developed by a group of leading companies in the sector. The occasion will introduce an educational experiment in Optoelectronics, the first of its kind, in Russia. Dmitry Bauman, Professor at the Department of Light Technologies and Optoelectronics and Director for Research at INTER RAO LED Systems will head the new program. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Educational Forum, Mr. Bauman told the audience what kind of specialists the program will train.

Russian and Finnish Students Learn About Business Together with FIRST+
30 students from Finland and Russia are currently attending the “Project-Based Approach to Business Canvas Model” intensive program in St. Petersburg. They learn about the use of business process engineering tools and work on cases of major companies like Valio, SOK and Bonava. ITMO University was chosen as one of the program’s main venues. The week-long course was made possible thanks to collaboration between ITMO University and the Tampere University of Applied Science, and a grant from the FIRST+ program, which promotes collaboration and partnership between universities of Russia and Finland.

Information Security Company InfoWatch Opens Training Center at ITMO University
ITMO University and InfoWatch, a Russian information security solutions company, have launched the ITMO-InfoWatch training center at the university. At the specialized computer room, students will learn to work with the company’s analytical systems. This way, they will learn firsthand from the developer about the modern tools used by one of Russia and CIS’s top IT companies.

ITMO and ER-Telecom Sign Research & Education Partnership Agreement
ITMO University and the telecommunications holding company ER-Telecom have signed an agreement on a partnership in the fields of education and science. The partners plan to collaborate on specialist training and tackle challenges faced in St. Petersburg in relation to Internet of Things and smart-city technologies.

ITMO University Partners Up With TRA Robotics
In mid-October, a project by Ivan Borisov, Oleg Borisov, Vladislav Gromov and under the supervision of Sergei Kolubin won the pitch session of Robotics & AI program which took place at Moscow’s Phystechpark as part of the annual GoTech forum. The PhD students presented a multipurpose gripping unit that remedies the key weaknesses ofexisting industrial robots and bested 80 other applicants with it. The British company TRA Robotics, a partner of the forum, got interested in the project and entered an agreement on a pilot project with ITMO University. Recently, the company and the university entered a new, long-term collaboration agreement.
