    Last week, AKSON Young Professionals, a project aimed at creating a platform for experience exchange in the field of science communication, organized its first meetup.   • Quizzing and Mythbusting: Medical Lab Initiative Comes to ITMO University

    On August 17, the Medical Lab nationwide event will be held in Russia with the involvement of the nation’s top scientists and medical professionals. In St. Petersburg, the event is going to take place at ITMO University and will be curated by Ilya Fomintsev, an oncologist and the head of the Ne Naprasno cancer prevention foundation. During the event, the expert will speak about the history of cancer and the myths that surround this disease.

  • Green Campuses and Recycling: Sustainable Development by Youth International Forum at ITMO

    Last week, ITMO University hosted the Sustainable Development by Youth International Educational Forum. Organized by students of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, the forum is aimed at introducing the youth to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. At the forum’s plenary session, its participants discussed the role of universities in the promotion of the SDGs, as well as the issue of solid waste recycling in St. Petersburg.

  • ScienceMedia Forum Participants on Their Work and Modern Journalism

    ScienceMedia, an annual media forum for student media contributors, wrapped up last week at ITMO University. Selected representatives of best editorial offices came to St. Petersburg to participate in specialized workshops and industry tours. This year, the organizers changed the rule of the contest and held a hackathon, during the two days of which the participants had to come up with a full-fledged longread covering the tours they’d been to. ITMO.NEWS met the students to learn more about their experience of pulling an all-nighter to work on a multimedia project and how this will help them in the future.

  • Head of Leningrad Laser Systems on Specifics of Russian Optical Components Market

    Headed by ITMO graduate Nikita Burov, the Leningrad Laser Systems company has been selling components and equipment to enterprises, research centers and laboratories that work in the field of photonics and optics since 2016. In 2019, the company became resident of ITMO Technopark, and now makes use of the university’s scientific expertise for developing its produce.   • Intercultural Nights, Legends and Movies: Erasmus+Youth Exchange Program

    Daria Zvyagintseva is a third-year student at ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. Last month, she took part in the Secret Library student exchange program coordinated by Erasmus+Youth. In the course of ten days, students from Estonia, Macedonia, Jordan, Turkey, Italy, Georgia and Russia shared their countries’ legends and traditions, and even shot a movie.   • Electronic Checklists for ITMO Graduating Students

    On May 14, ITMO University launches a new system of electronic checklists for graduating students. This means that students won’t have to waste any more time in lines with a paper form. The information about unfulfilled requirements can now be found in the “My Page -> Education” section at isu.ifmo.ru. The project was initiated by Special Projects Center and the Department of Information Technologies. Ekaterina Kalkina, the project manager, told ITMO.NEWS about all the important steps to be taken to graduate as planned.

  • ITMO University Wins State Support Research Grant

    The Ministry of Education and Science’s competition for grant support of National Technological Initiative (NTI) centers has ended. The selected participants will receive funding for research and educational programs in the eight interdisciplinary fields. ITMO University won the funding for research in the field of machine learning and cognitive technologies. For that, the university has recently created a consortium of 18 organizations, which includes such companies as MTS, Mail.ru, Speech Technology Center, Er-Telecom and others, as well as several universities and scientific centers.  The five-year program of the National Center for Cognitive Technologies intends to solve a set of scientific, educational and infrastructural tasks, which will result in overcoming the technological barriers associated with the systemic advancement of cognitive technologies in promising NSI markets.

  • Total Dictation-2018 at ITMO University

    This Saturday, April 14, ITMO University hosted the 15th annual Total Dictation, a voluntary test in the Russian language. This year participants from more than 1000 cities around the world took part in the initiative. Some participated in the Dictation in the mountains of Northern Caucasus, or even in space. What makes Total Dictation truly special is that many renowned actors, musicians, writers and even robots take part in it as “readers”. At ITMO University, this year’s Total Dictation was hosted by Marina Kacuba, a Russian poet, and Ernesto Zatknites, a Russian rapper.
