ITMO Physicists Create Unclonable Anti-Counterfeiting Silicon Labels
Scientists from ITMO University developed unclonable anti-counterfeiting labels, which are based on silicon nanoparticles modified with a laser. It’s impossible to change the color, structure, and location of the particles: these parameters are random, which makes the label safe from counterfeiting. In order to check if it’s authentic, all you need to do is upload its picture into a special program.

ITMO Scientists Find a Way to Reconfigure Topological States of Light
A research team from ITMO University, Australian National University, and Jilin University has provided experimental proof of the conjecture that topological states of light can be produced not only by influencing the crystal lattice geometry but also by changing the shape of the meta-atoms and their mutual orientation. Moreover, the new approach helps change the position and the degree of light localization in real time.

ITMO Researchers Discover New Properties of Metasurfaces Thanks to Ultrashort Pulse Lasers
A group of researchers from ITMO University, the Australian National University, and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) has for the first time demonstrated effective generation of higher harmonics in silicon metasurfaces. This result was achieved due to resonant states with long lifetimes. The new discovery brings closer the creation of attosecond radiation sources based on semiconductor nanostructures. Ultrashort pulse lasers which earned their pioneers the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018 make it possible to excite and explore very rapid processes in nature and matter. This opens new horizons for understanding ultrafast physics and faster information recording.

Invisible Material: Researchers Model Metasurfaces in Hybrid Anapole Modes for the First Time
Global trends are leaning towards miniaturization, minimalism, and portability – and that's the case for research, too. These days, metasurfaces are gaining popularity as platforms for super-thin devices equal, or sometimes superior to, their "normal-sized" counterparts. This is achieved thanks to “invisible” particles in anapole modes. Recently, these particles have revolutionized nanophotonics, but researchers from ITMO, Moscow, and Riga went even further and developed hybrid anapole modes. Their new model is more efficient than its predecessors and opens new applications for metasurfaces in optics.

ITMO Scientists on Developing Laser Brush for Drawing on Metallic Surfaces
With this non-paint brush of over 20 colors and shades, artists may no longer need to be afraid of uneven lines or inadequate palettes. All missteps can be easily erased or repainted with no risk of ruining a picture. The first prototype of the laser brush should see the light of day by the end of summer. In the meantime, the researchers have published an article describing the very technology of laser miniature painting on metallic surfaces.
