  • ITMO Holds First Stage of Its Physics Contest for School Students

    The  first online round of ITMO’s physics contest for school students will take place on April 14-21. There, students in grade 8-11 will get to solve problems that were inspired by contemporary research practices. Winners of the first stage will not only receive prizes, but will also get the chance to visit ITMO’s research laboratories and talk to the university’s leading scientists.

    Participants of the event attended lectures by industry experts and designed assignments for each other. For example, some were tasked with creating a bot that would emulate the classic authors of Russian literature, while others – a bot capable of identifying the language used in online comments.

  • Herzen University and ITMO Specialists Develop a Bot that Helps Prepare for the Unified State Exam in Chemistry

    The Chemistry Bot allows future school graduates to study for their Unified State Exam (USE) in chemistry interactively.   • School Students from All Over Russia and Belarus Take Part in the Congress of Young Scientists

    The Congress of Young Scientists took place on April 15-18 at ITMO University. This year, school and university students presented their research online. Ten sections for school students were attended by 118 participants from 34 cities all over Russia and Belarus. Their young age didn’t stop the participants from conducting real scientific research with the help of their advisors. We asked some of the students what their projects are about, how they liked the online format, and what they want to work on in future.

  • Geek Teachers: ITMO University Graduate’s Project for Training School Teachers in New Technologies

    Having graduated from ITMO University in 2014, Maria Plotkina worked as a designer and, later, as a school teacher.  Over a year ago, together with her colleague, she established the project “Geek Teachers”, designed to reconcile the traditional school system with groundbreaking educational technologies.   • ITMO Scientists Help School Team Win ICCET 2019

    Seven teams became winners of the International Contest of Engineering Teams “Kvantoriada 2019” (ICCET 2019) that took place in Moscow at the end of last year. Among them was the team Quantum from Astrakhan who got help from the scientists of ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering in the development of their prototype.   • Serious Science: How School Students Create Projects at Sirius and Develop Them Under the Guidance of ITMO

    This summer, dozens of Russian school students came to Sirius to work on projects in 12 different tracks, from Nanotechnology to Cognitive Studies, New Materials and Smart cities. Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering participated in the program as mentors and project developers. With their guidance, the students developed breakthrough nanostructured antibacterial surfaces and a metalens for focusing Wi-Fi radiation. To continue working on their projects, the students came to ITMO where they not only attended lectures but also got a chance to visit ITMO’s many laboratories and work on real-life lab equipment.   • Urban Environment as a Learning Laboratory

    School is one of the most conservative educational structures in Russia. To solve this problem, Anastasia Rossinskaya, a PhD in pedagogical sciences and leading research associate at the Laboratory for Sociocultural Educational Practices of the Institute of System Projects at Moscow City University, proposes to stop expecting radical changes and focus on modern educational formats instead. The researcher held a workshop for St. Petersburg’s teachers, called “City as a Student Book”, where she shared about how to help school students familiarize themselves with their cities and what they can learn on their way home from school.
