  • Scientists Report on Crucial Reduction of Indian Lion Genome Diversity

    Modern bioinformatics allows us to take a look into the past and find out when certain species diverged during evolution, which of them still are genetically close to each other, and which are not. An international team of researchers, which, among others, includes the academic supervisor of ITMO University’s Laboratory of Genomic Diversity and researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, and other research centers from all over the world, analyzed the genomes of extinct and living lions. They managed to determine when the divergence took place, as well as come to several other conclusions on genetic diversity of the modern lion population in India. The results are published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

  • ITMO Scientists Propose an Improved Technology for Detecting Ultra-Low Magnetic Fields

    It is for several years now that ITMO University scientists have been working on the creation of supersensitive sensors for measuring ultra-low magnetic fields that occur, for example, in the brain. These sensors can be made from compact ceramic resonators and defect ensemble (NV centers) in a diamond. Recently, the physicists have published an article in the Review of Scientific Instruments journal, where they described a new, more efficient version of an antenna for such measuring devices. ITMO.NEWS spoke with the authors to find out why we should measure the magnetic field of the human brain, and how this is proposed to be done.

  • Scientists Propose a Carbon Dot-Based Method for Increasing the Efficiency of Solar Cells and LED

    An international group of scientists, including some from ITMO University, has proposed a method that allows for significantly increasing the efficiency of solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The scientists managed to achieve this result by augmenting the auxiliary layers of the devices responsible for electron transport rather than working with the main active layer. The work has been published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

  • Scientists from ITMO University Describe and Emulate New Quantum State of Entangled Photons

    A research team from ITMO University, with the help of their colleagues from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Politecnico di Torino, has predicted a novel type of topological quantum state of two photons and proved their predictions experimentally. The method developed by the researchers relies on the analogy: instead of expensive experiments with quantum structures of two or more entangled photons, they have used resonant electric circuits that can be described by similar equations. The obtained results can be useful for the creation of optical chips and quantum computers without the need for expensive experiments. The research was supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The research was published in Nature Communications.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop an Algorithm That Makes the Inference of Population History Models for People and Animals Easier and More Accurate

    Bioinformatics scientists from ITMO University have developed a software tool, which quickly and effectively analyses genome data to infer probable models of demographic history of specific species, such as plants, animals or humans. Using complex calculations, the software can suggest with a very high degree of probability the course of history of a particular group of living organisms.  This includes identification of periods with mass extinction or mass population growth and information about contacts with other populations of the same species in the past. The scientists’ article about this methodology has been published in the journal Giga Science.

  • St. Petersburg Scientists Propose a Technology That Can Reduce the Cost of High-Efficiency Solar Cells

    A group of St. Petersburg scientists has proposed and experimentally tested a technology for the fabrication of high-efficiency solar cells based on A3B5 semiconductors integrated on a silicon substrate, which in the future may increase the efficiency of the existing single-junction photovoltaic converters by 1.5 times. The development of the technology was forecasted by the Nobel Laureate Zhores Alferov. The results have been published in the journal Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells.
