    A native of Sweida, Syria, Shireen decided to continue her studies at ITMO University after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Damascus. She is currently working on her Master’s degree in Laser Engineering and Laser Technologies. Despite being in lockdown due to coronavirus for the last three months, she still maintains a positive attitude and practices playing traditional music.

  • WorldSkills Russia: Why Participate?

    The qualification round of WorldSkills Russia in Laser Technologies has recently taken place at ITMO; this was the first time the university hosted such a competition. The participants showed their skills in working with laser systems and equipment. The round’s winner, Yaroslav Golubev from the Faculty of Laser and Light Engineering, advanced to the All-Russian round that will take place in late November in Moscow.

  • Laser Tech Summer School: Graduates Share Their Experience

    The school program pays little attention to lasers even though laser technologies are now very important in the fields of medicine, IT, robotics, space technology and many other applied sciences. ITMO University’s Laser Technology Summer School remedies this disparity: there, high schoolers can learn about the potential that laser technology has in today’s world, how it works and what future awaits those who start a career in laser optics. 36 Summer School graduates have just finished the course last week. ITMO.NEWS spoke to them about their experience and future plans.

  • Vadim Veiko: “Lasers Are Omnipotent”

    Professor Vadim Veiko, head of the Department of Laser Systems and Technologies, was awarded with the Order II Class "For Merit to the Fatherland" for his contribution to science and education. The professor is one of the stakeholders of laser technologies in Russia – in 1965 he established a laboratory and in the 1980s – the first chair of laser technologies. In the interview he talked about his recent research projects, forecasts about the future of technologies and his hobby, which helps him conquer new peaks.

  • ITMO’s Researchers for Nature: How Does New Ultra-Compact Laser Work?

    Among others articles in January’s issue of Nature there is "Optical physics: Supercavity lasing" article by ITMO’s researchers Yuri Kivshar and Mikhail Rybin, devoted to research by physicists from University of California, San Diego. In the article Russian researchers talk to representatives of scientific fields, unrelated to photonics, about compact infrared lasers of a new generation that use bound states in the continuum (BICs) concept.

  • New Lasers for the Modern Industry

    Promising laser technologies are used in medicine, navigation, industry as well as for falsification protection and art objects' preservation. ITMO University as one of the leaders in this field has received 31 million rubles for development of the unique laser systems. Currently, the University takes part in the Federal Target Program "Research and Development Projects in Top-Priority Fields Related to Science and Technology in Russia 2014−2020."
