  • Scientists Make Quantum Germanium “Islands” Glow With Hundredfold Intensity

    A team of Russian scientists including researchers from ITMO University, A.M. Prokhorov General Physics Institute, the Institute for Physics of Microstructures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, and Lomonosov Moscow State University succeeded in enhancing the luminance of quantum dots on a silicon substrate. The methods used by the scientists can help create next generation microchips that will receive and transfer information from a computer to a fiber-optic network a lot faster.     First year Master’s students of ITMO’s Art & Science program have conducted a series of studies on photoreception in higher plants. The research was based on the hypothesis that plants have simple eyes, ocelli – thanks to which plants might be able to perceive their surroundings.

  • ITMO Scientists on Developing Laser Brush for Drawing on Metallic Surfaces

    With this non-paint brush of over 20 colors and shades, artists may no longer need to be afraid of uneven lines or inadequate palettes. All missteps can be easily erased or repainted with no risk of ruining a picture. The first prototype of the laser brush should see the light of day by the end of summer. In the meantime, the researchers have published an article describing the very technology of laser miniature painting on metallic surfaces.

    The National Center for Cognitive Research and the Institute of Design & Urban Studies decided to ask the residents of St. Petersburg to evaluate their satisfaction with living conditions in the city. The survey will show what venues and services the residents would like to see in different districts and will help urbanists make the infrastructure more convenient and functional.

  • ITMO and Almazov National Medical Research Centre Researchers Study The Effect of Gaming On the Human Brain

    Pavel Tikhonov and Mikhail Zubkov, researchers from ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering are working on a project that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the brains of people who spend 20 to 30 hours a week gaming. The scientists hypothesize similarities between the brains of ardent gamers and people addicted to chemical substances.
