  • Unexplored St. Petersburg: Icebreaker Krassin

Our city is indeed Russia’s “cultural capital”, with its many palaces, theatres, art galleries and such, to the point where you just can’t help but get tired of all that glamorous bustle. Just for a change, you’d want something different, something to help you appreciate reality rather than fantasy, and show that our world is a wonder by itself. Luckily for those who know what I’m talking about, there are several places in St. Petersburg that offer this kind of experience, and today we’ll be writing about one of them.

  • Kunstkamera: Russia’s Bizarre First Museum

Last week, on the eve of Halloween we were remembering the scary stuff from Russian folklore. This reminded me of one place in St. Petersburg: as a child, I deemed it the city’s scariest, and I still know quite a few people who swear that they will never go there again. So what’s so special about this “Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography”? What makes it so disturbing?

  • Unexplored St. Petersburg: Tauride Palace Orangery

Lately, we’ve been writing about places that offer some unique form of entertainment; well, today’s story is not like that. Despite its fancy name, the Tauride Palace Orangery might seem a bit too plain in comparison with such spots as Annenkirche or the Museum of Sound: a 20th-century greenhouse packed with what I’d call overgrown houseplants. Still, after only a short visit, I just can’t resist writing about the place.

The Museum of Sound is a truly novel entity that envelops several projects in the field of experimental music; part concert hall, part bar, part lecture hall, it is a place that will definitely leave fond memories, and who knows - you might become a regular before you even know it!

  • Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines: An Unexpected Experience

We’re indeed living in the age of progress. Things change fast, maybe even too fast, and sometimes it’s hard to remember the time when we didn’t have smartphones, Wi-Fi, and access to a whole galaxy of information and entertainment. Still, while aimlessly browsing the Web in an attempt to find anything that would pique my interest, I can’t help but get nostalgic about the good old times when technology, simple as it was, was more of a miracle than some commonplace amenity. Lucky for me and everyone who feels the same, there are places that offer us an opportunity to relive this long-forgotten experience. Among them is the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines; its exhibits, rustic and obsolete as they are, still carry the peculiar attraction of a bygone era.

  • Saint Petersburg Hidden Gems: Annenkirche

St. Petersburg is indeed a city of surprises. Having always existed on the verge of novelty and tradition, it never ceases to amaze those ready to look past its commonplace attractions. Oftentimes, it only takes a single step away from your regular tourist track to find wonders much different from its well-advertised treasures. Annenkirche, a historic Lutheran church on Kirochnaya Ulitsa, is one such place: misleadingly plain on the outside, it offers a truly unique experience that you will never forget.
