ITMO Scientists Determine Impact of Probiotics on Human Gut Microbiome
A group of researchers from ITMO University and the company Knomics conducted a month-long experiment studying how the microbiota of 150 volunteers responded to regular consumption of probiotics-enriched fermented dairy products. Published in Nutrients, the findings demonstrate that the introduction of these dietary changes increases the amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which in its turn can have a positive impact on the overall health condition. The project was conducted with the participation of PepsiCo R&D Inc.

What Are Vernacular Regions and Why Study Them?
Should we perceive a city according to its administrative layout, or it is better to consider how its citizens fathom the urban environment? In the late 1960s, American geographists introduced the term “vernacular region”. In recent years, Russian urban scientists also started to research this subject. At a joint seminar organized by ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies and MLA+, experts discussed why it’s necessary to study regions that are not outlined by official borders, and how that can contribute to improving the urban environment.

ITMO Scientists Created a Surface Allowing Loss-Free Propagation and Management of Light
Physicists from ITMO University have developed the first synthetic dielectric surface where the propagation of electromagnetic waves isn’t hampered by existing defects and can be manipulated. In the future, such a structure will enable the creation of more reliable optical devices and communication circuits. The findings were published in Applied Physics Letters. The project was supported by the Russian Science Foundation.

Chemists 'Print' Sensors for Nano-Objects
Young scientists from ITMO University proposed a new type of optical nano-sensors. Their operating principle is based on the interaction of light in thin films: a similar effect can be observed in soap bubbles. Such sensors can be quickly manufactured using an inkjet printer and special ink made of titanium dioxide. In the future, the sensors can be used for rapid biomedical analysis. The results are published in Nanoscale.

European University’s Nikita Lomagin: How IT is Changing Historical Science
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from the 872-day siege by the Nazi Germany. ITMO University was one of the venues of a nation-wide academic conference dedicated to this occasion. Even today, historians continue to study the circumstances of one of the 20th century’s greatest tragedies. Nikita Lomagin, a Russian historian, leading expert on the Siege of Leningrad, and a professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, studies the social and economic aspects of that period. In an interview with for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the scientific methods of history, the benefits IT offers to historians, and why we must discover new forms of representing historical knowledge.

Physicists from ITMO University Complete Tests of New Class of Resonators
Physicists from ITMO University, Ioffe Institute, and the Australian National University have examined a new mechanism of producing high-quality optical resonators. It is based on the mutual destructive interference of two low-quality optical states in one resonator allowing for secure “trapping” of light in various materials even at small scale. The theoretical results of this study were confirmed experimentally, laying the basis for new miniature devices: effective sensors, optical filters and nonlinear light sources. The research was published in SPIE Advanced Photonics.
