Chemists From ITMO University Created New Diagnostic Method for Difficult Climate Conditions
Scientists from the SCAMT Laboratory of ITMO University developed a method to detect viral RNA without special equipment. The sensor is based on a polymerization reaction: if the sample contains traces of the target virus, then under the ultraviolet irradiation the liquid-sensor turns into a gel. The results of such an analysis can easily be detected even by people with limited vision. As the required reagents are widely available and resistant to temperature extremes, the method can be used in difficult field conditions. The results are published in RSC Advances.

Physicists Conduct Study of Terahertz Radiation in Liquids
A research team from ITMO University and the University of Rochester (the USA) have conducted a study on the formation of terahertz radiation in liquids. Previously, the generation of such radiation in a liquid medium was considered impossible due to high absorption. However, in their new research, the scientists described this phenomenon’s physical nature and demonstrated that liquid radiation sources can be equally effective to traditional ones. The results have been published in Applied Physics Letters.

Scientists Propose Tractor Beam Concept to Capture Particles Using Light
Physicists from ITMO University have developed a model of an optical tractor beam able to capture particles based on new artificial materials. Such a beam is capable of moving particles or cells towards the radiation source. The study showed that hyperbolic metasurfaces have great potential for experiments on the creation of the tractor beam, as well as for its practical applications. The results have been published in ACS Photonics.

Russian Developers Created a Platform for Interactive Analysis of Metagenomic Data
A team of developers from Skolkovo, ITMO University and MIPT presented an online service called Knomics-Biota, which allows for a comprehensive study of intestinal microbiome genetic data. Using this service, you can figure out what types of bacteria are present in hundreds of gut metagenomes, their relative proportion, and the amount of vitamins and other beneficial substances they produce. With the help of an interactive interface, you can look at the results from different perspectives, which helps to identify the relationship between microbiota and nutrition, lifestyle and health. The research was published in BioData Mining.

Scientists Designed Nanocontainers for Bacterial Metabolism Control
Researchers from ITMO University developed special nanocontainers that can translate the light signal into metabolic changes in bacteria. The containers consist of titanium dioxide nanoparticles coated with silver and polymers. Once the particles are heated with laser irradiation, the polymer conformation changes and the container opens, releasing the contents. Scientists tested the new system’s performance using a model enzyme, arabinose. However, it can be replaced with other active substances in order to use the containers for drug delivery. The research was published in Bioconjugate Chemistry.

Inkjet Printers Can Produce Cheap Micro-Waveguides for Optical Computers
Scientists from ITMO University have proposed a new technology for creating optical micro-waveguides based on inkjet printing. By using this method, it is possible to create waveguides with the necessary parameters quickly and without expensive equipment and complex procedures. The new technology is now being optimized for the production of optical elements on an industrial scale. The results are published in Advanced Optical Materials.

Tel Aviv University Professor Boris Malomed on Non-Linear Physics and Solitons
The field of optics has the potential to radically change the way we use information. During a visit to ITMO University, Professor Boris Malomed from the Tel Aviv University shared some insights into his work. Prof. Malomed has spent more than 30 years in the field of non-linear optics and solitons. His h-index is among the highest of all researchers in this subject area. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Boris Malomed explained how optics shape our lives today and what effects it has on other fields of physics.

Scientists Developed Enzymes with Remote Control
Researchers from ITMO University developed a method to enhance the activity of enzymes by using radio frequency radiation. The method requires making a special complex consisting of enzymes and magnetic nanoparticles. The particles can adsorb radio emission and convert it to heat, resulting in enzymatic processes acceleration by more than four times. At the same time, the particles-covered enzyme becomes more resistant to high temperatures. Such method can be used to create radio-controlled biochemical systems, as well as to adjust metabolism in living organisms. The results are published in ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering.

Physicists Discover New Way of Resonance Tuning for Nonlinear Optics
A research team from ITMO University and the Australian National University has discovered that different metasurfaces exhibit the same behavior provided a symmetry breaking is introduced to their unit cells (“meta-atoms”). Asymmetry of meta-atoms results in high-quality (high Q) resonances in the transmittance spectra of metasurfaces. Such resonances are capable of multiple amplification of external signals. By manipulating the asymmetry, scientists were able to control the resonances and thus a metasurface’s optical response, which is highly desirable for practical applications. The results of this research were published in Physical Review Letters.
