Student Spotlight: Devtanu Bose, India
All the way from Kolkata, India Devtanu is a Master’s student in robotics and artificial intelligence at ITMO. He is also an intern in Nancy, France where he is working on a project in thermal physics. In this interview, he shares his story of getting selected for this internship and successfully making it to France amidst travel restrictions. Besides studies, he is also a Real Madrid faithful and wishes to witness the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris.

ITMO Youth Robotics Team Wins RoboCup Russia Open 2022
The team of ITMO’s Youth Robotics Lab became first in the RCJ OnStage category among school students aged 14-19 at the national round of RoboCup 2022. At the contest, the team Simple Dimple presented their musical robots who performed Caprice No. 24 by Niccolò Paganini and Kalinka Malinka by Ivan Larionov. The show featured a robot (playing the balalaika), one of the team members (playing the dombra), and robot matryoshkas as their backup dancers.

ITMO.EduStars Winner Alexander Kapitonov on How to Motivate Students and Make Engineering Interesting
Alexander Kapitonov started teaching robotics as a PhD student thanks to his experience working at the Presidential Physics and Mathematics Lyceum No. 239. Now, he not only teaches and leads projects, but also heads ITMO’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. Last year, Alexander was one of the winners of the ITMO.EduStars contest. We asked him about his principles in teaching and the tasks of a faculty’s dean.

ITMO PhD Student Evgeny Khomutov: My Main Goal Is to Be the Best Version of Myself
Evgeny Khomutov graduated from the corporate Master’s program operated by ITMO’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics and the Sberbank Robotics Laboratory. Having successfully completed a project in collaboration with the company, he decided to continue his studies as a PhD student. These days, Evgeny is developing a system that will help design gripping devices automatically making it accessible even to novices. In the future, this system can serve as a basis for more personalized (and cheaper) hand prosthetics. We asked him why it’s more interesting to work at a university and not in the industry and how robotics can help people with special needs.

ITMO Graduates Mikhail Kakanov and Alexei Ovcharov on Why They Decided to Pursue their PhDs
Mikhail and Alexei became friends when they were Master’s students at ITMO’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics. They worked jointly on various projects, shared their ideas and thoughts, helped each other with calculations, and then both decided to stay in the world of academia and get their PhDs at their alma mater. Now, they develop new approaches to robot control and implement other projects, including ones in collaboration with major companies. ITMO.NEWS talked to the students to learn more about their research and reasons for doing science.

I Am a Professional: Tips from Former Winners of Robotics Track
I Am a Professional is a national competition for students of all fields – from humanities to engineering. Winners receive diplomas, as well as advantages when enrolling into Master’s and PhD programs, monetary prizes, and internship opportunities at major Russian companies. This year, ITMO is organizing three core tracks in partnership with Sberbank: Robotics, Programming & IT, and Information & Cyber Security, as well as a corporate track titled Technological Entrepreneurship in collaboration with VEEROUTE. We talked to the winners of last year’s Robotics track and asked them about the best ways to prepare for the contest and the importance of not underestimating your strengths.

ITMO Youth Robotics Team Outshine All at RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2021
Friendly Friends, the team of ITMO’s Youth Robotics Lab, and their robot musician Robert Robotecky placed first at RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2021. At the tournament final, the robot performed Sous le Ciel de Paris and Blue Canary while riding a hoverboard.
