Russia to Launch First Educational Media-Project on Cancer Prevention
Cancer prevention foundation “Ne naprasno” (its name translates as "Not in vain" from Russian - Ed.) won a Presidential grant for creating Profilaktika.Media - an educational media project on evidence-based medicine and oncology. Two Master’s students of ITMO’s Science Communication Program are responsible for this project: Ksenia Zhirnova and Elizaveta Dubovik. ITMO.NEWS spoke with these students and found out what it's all about: namely, what is cancer prevention; why there are still so many misconceptions about cancer in Russia; how such a media project could help cancer patients, as well as improve doctors’ training.

Researchers Use Glass Microparticles to Enhance Solar Cell Efficiency
Scientists from ITMO University have developed a new solar cell coating based on amorphous silicon that combines the features of an electrode and those of a light-trapping structure. The coating enabled researchers to cut down on reflected light and avoid the overheating of solar cells, thus increasing their overall efficiency by 20%. Moreover, the suggested method is highly suitable for industrial needs due to its relatively low cost and simplicity. The research was published in Optics Letters.

High Speed Video Recording Precisely Measures Blood Cell Velocity
Scientists from ITMO University created a high-speed video capillaroscopy system that enables direct measurement of red blood cell velocity. Coupled with sophisticated software, the system can raise the accuracy of vascular condition assessment. Such a system can come in useful for monitoring how efficient certain therapies are. The results of the research were published in Optics and Engineering.

Physicist Maxim Gorlach on getting ahead in science: "The worst scenario is to just drift with the tide".
Four years ago, a researcher at the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, Maxim Gorlach, decided to move from Minsk (Belarus) to St. Petersburg to enter a Ph.D. program at ITMO University and study metamaterials as part of Pavel Belov's research group. Since then, not only did he manage to join in on a new field of research, but also work in the US and Australia, defend his Ph.D. thesis and win a grant from the Russian Science Foundation together with his colleagues. He told ITMO.NEWS about what dividends does doing research give, why the academic competitions can become a real social elevator for a high school or university student and how to not miss the opportunities for personal development while being a university student.

Safety, Resource Conservation and New Motivation Solutions - What Laboratories of the Future Should Look Like
Cramped laboratories, full to the brim with equipment and uncomfortable chairs – all that is a thing of the past. Even ten years ago not a lot of people concerned themselves with effective planning of lab spaces. Today’s market presents new demands and standards. Labs are faced with new requirements regarding safety and efficient consumption of energy. They also become not just a workplace, but a comfortable space for those who work there. Best practices and trends in lab design are the topic of discussion at the 1st International Conference “Laboratory Space Design” at ITMO University.

ITMO Scientists Prove Skyrmion Laser Manipulation
In recent years the leaders of the global semiconductor industry - companies such as Intel and IBM - have faced inability to accelerate the speed of modern computing systems by increasing the density of microprocessors per unit area. This is caused by fundamental physical limitations. However, it initialized the search for new models and methods of their implementation. Electronics of the future will be based on this research. One of the fields that scientists suggested was spintronics and its subdivision - skyrmionics, which studies exotic magnetic ring formations called skyrmions. They were first obtained in a laboratory in 2010. In the future they may find use in development of more efficient memory chips. Like graphene in the field of nanomaterials, skyrmions can lead the way to go beyond 10-nanometer technological process of chip production. Researchers at ITMO University are also working in this field and have recently managed to demonstrate in theory that properties of skyrmions can be controlled using external laser radiation. The results of this work were published in the Physical Review Letters.
