  • Gennady Korotkevich Wins Google Code Jam Fourth Time in a Row

    ITMO University’s Master’s student Gennady Korotkevich has set a new record as the four-time winner of the international programming competition Google Code Jam. Evgeny Kapun, a PhD student at ITMO, took 5th place. The final round of the competition took place in Dublin on 11th August and lasted four hours. One day earlier, the Distributed Code Jam competition was also held in Ireland, in which Evgeny Kapun took second place, and Pavel Mavrin, a tutor at the Computer Technology Department at ITMO, took fourth place

  • New Genetic Algorithm by ITMO's Scientists Wins Prize at GECCO-2017

    ​Maksim Buzdalov, Associate Professor at the Computer Technology Department and Benjamin Doerr, his colleague from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris) got the award for best report at one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of evolutionary computations - GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computational Conference) that took place from July 15 to 19 in Berlin. Also, the paper by Maksim Buzdalov and Master's student Nina Bulanova was named best in the student section.

  • MIT Global Startup Labs: Coming Soon to Your Smartphone

    The eight-week MIT Global Startup Labs program, organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was launched in June at ITMO University’s business incubator. 29 students and graduates from St. Petersburg, Moscow and Irkutsk, supervised by mentors from MIT and Sloan School of Management, are given two months to assemble a team, present a prototype of a new mobile application and to develop its marketing strategy. In August the participants will present final prototypes to potential investors. ITMO.NEWS describes the apps that very soon might be a part of your mobile experience.

  • Game Development Education on the Rise in Russia

    According to Newzoo, the global games market will reach almost 109 billion dollars by the end of 2017. University programs that train future game developers also grow in number. The Russian games market is expected to reach 1.4 billion by the end of this year, say Newzoo. However there are still very few game development programs in Russia. Where and how can one learn the subject and can universities train developers and managers at an acceptable level? This was the topic of a panel discussion at the GameDev Meetup organized by GameBeets community. The event’s organizers and speakers spoke with ITMO.NEWS about the future of game development in higher education, talent shortage, market needs and the reasons why neural networks can’t replace humans – at least for now.

  • ITMO Enters Medialogia's Universities Media-Ranking

    In early July the “Medialogia” company published a ranking of Russian universities for May 2017. The ranking traces universities’ success in representing themselves through mass media. It is the first time that ITMO University appeared in the list, ranking ninth from the get-go. Also appearing among the Top-10 are: the Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Higher School of Economics, and other leading russian universities.

  • New Summer School on Concurrent Computing

    From July 3 to 7 more than 90 developers, students and young scientists from Russia, Europe and the Middle East will attend a course dedicated to the theoretical and practical aspects of concurrent computing. The school’s program will include lectures and workshops developed by leading experts from the USA, Switzerland, France, Austria, Israel and Russia. The first day of the Summer School on Practice and Theory of Concurrent Computing at ITMO University was marked with a talk by Nir Shavit, a renowned scientist, winner of the Gödel and Dijkstra prizes and professor at the Tel Aviv University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

  • Training IT Specialists for Global Financial Systems – ITMO’s New Programs and Collaborations

    Starting with the new academic year, ITMO will launch two new Master's programs for the new Institute of Financial Cybertechnologies (ITMO.Fintech) –“Mathematical Support and Software for Global Financial Systems” and “Big Data in Financial Technologies”. The programs’ focus will be on training highly-qualified personnel that can design, develop and maintain the mathematical support and software for global financial systems and stock markets. Not only university lecturers, but representatives from the field's leading companies will participate in the educational process. Among such companies is the Itiviti International Company that develops financial software and innovative solutions for telemarketing systems. The prospects of this collaboration were discussed by Maria Sigova, Fintech's director, and Itiviti's representatives last Friday.
