  • How ITMO’s Partnership With Sperasoft Moves the Game Industry Forward

    The international game development studio and ITMO University have maintained a partnership for several years now. But in 2021, their relationship advanced to the next level when Sperasoft became an official corporate partner of the Game Development Technologies Master’s program. Now, the company’s experts will take direct part in the creation of the program’s curriculum. We talked to Igor Smirnov, a senior engineering manager at Sperasoft, and Andrey Karsakov, the head of the Master’s program, about the new partnership and how ITMO students and graduates can apply for an internship at Sperasoft.

  • ITMO Students Receive First Place at DevGAMM Awards

    Students of ITMO University’s Faculty of Digital Transformation (Master’s program Game Development Technologies) have placed first in the Best Student Game category at DevGAMM Awards 2021 and secured a prize of $4,000. The competition was held as part of the game developer conference DevGAMM – the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe. The event is held annually in Moscow, Kyiv, Minsk, and other cities in the region.

    Isabella Merkulova and Mariia Kokaiia work together at Panoramik GameDev Studio, and recently they started the YouTube channel DEVchata (a pun on the Russian word for “gals” – Ed.). The co-hosts conduct interviews with experts from the IT world and discuss the industry's concerns. ITMO.NEWS talked to Isabella and Mariia to find out about the channel’s history and plans.

  • Wargaming Specialist Hosts Intensive Course for Master’s Students of Game Development Technologies

    The Game Development Technologies Master’s program at ITMO recently hosted an intensive course by Svyatoslav Torick, a product vision expert at Wargaming. The short course, which focused on how to develop one’s idea for a game and monetize it, took place entirely online. Still, that didn’t stop the students from making the most of the opportunity to chat with an industry expert. We spoke to Svyatoslav Torick, Alexander Khoroshavin, the curator of the program, and the program’s students, to find out what the future game developers have taken away from the course and how this knowledge will come in handy in their careers.

  • Go with the Flow, Ask Questions, and Shoot for the Stars: Lessons from a Gamedev Meetup

    Unreal Engine 4 is a popular tool for creating video games. For the second year in a row, this weekend ITMO University hosted a meetup for developers who use this engine in their day-to-day work. Professionals and amateurs attended lectures, participated in workshops and, last but not least, developed their tight-knit community: after all, the meetup’s main goal was not only to give the participants a set of lectures but also introduce them to one another and encourage them to contribute to the solution of the profession’s common problems. ITMO.NEWS, too, stopped by a couple of events to listen to the participants’ stories.

  • GameDev Specialists and Practice-Oriented Education

    Today computer game development companies suffer from a lack of decent specialists. There are a lot of programmers but only a few that can develop games. This topic was discussed at the Bytex conference in Saransk (Russia) which was dedicated to business collaboration with IT education. Andrey Karsakov, senior lecturer at the High Performance Computing Department presented the methodology used at ITMO University for the Master’s program “Computer Game Development Technologies”. The approach was supported by industry experts.

  • Game Development Education on the Rise in Russia

    According to Newzoo, the global games market will reach almost 109 billion dollars by the end of 2017. University programs that train future game developers also grow in number. The Russian games market is expected to reach 1.4 billion by the end of this year, say Newzoo. However there are still very few game development programs in Russia. Where and how can one learn the subject and can universities train developers and managers at an acceptable level? This was the topic of a panel discussion at the GameDev Meetup organized by GameBeets community. The event’s organizers and speakers spoke with ITMO.NEWS about the future of game development in higher education, talent shortage, market needs and the reasons why neural networks can’t replace humans – at least for now.
