  • ITMO Student Dmitry Vasilyev on Developing Apps for People With Disabilities

    Warning the deaf and hard-of-hearing about potential dangers, calling emergency services through context commands, and assisting people with visual impairments in learning how to type – all these are projects developed by Dmitry Vasilyev, a Master’s student of ITMO’s program Programming for the Visually Impaired. One of Dmitry’s apps is already used by several hundred people with disabilities, but he plans to create a whole ecosystem of apps with access to various inclusive technologies. In this interview, we talk about the results of Dmitry’s projects, his further plans, and his big dream.

  • Participants of Russian-Japanese Youth Exchange Discuss Accessibility in St. Petersburg

    Over the course of six days, St. Petersburg welcomed a group of students and volunteers from the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD). In that time, they’ve explored the city, learned what kind of assistance people with disabilities receive in Russia, and familiarized themselves with accessibility-related projects developed by ITMO students. A correspondent for ITMO.NEWS met with some of the program’s participants to find out why St. Petersburg is behind Japan in terms of accessibility, why persons with disabilities find it easier to socialize in Russia, and what makes ITMO reminiscent of Singaporean universities.

  • Summer School in Finland: Accessible Design and Technologies

    The 29th annual summer school has wrapped at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, featuring courses in natural sciences, maths and informatics. One of the school’s most important focuses was Accessible Design, a field developing the methods and techniques that pave the way for inclusive technologies not only in regard to accessible urban spaces but also usable mobile app design and a wide range of other aspects. The course “Inclusive and Accessible Design of ICT: Foundational Introduction to Creating Technology for Humans with Diverse Sensory, Cognitive and Physical Abilities” was, inter alia, attended by the representatives of ITMO University, who related their Finnish experience to ITMO.NEWS.

  • International ITMO Accessibility Days at ITMO University

    While the topic of environmental accessibility has long been discussed in Europe and the US, in Russia, it’s just gaining momentum. To promote accessibility and create a platform for sharing experiences between experts in the field, the staff of ITMO’s Center for Usability and Mixed Reality organized the International ITMO Accessibility Days Сonference. Hosted on August 14, the event was attended, among others, by experts from the United States: Helen T. Sullivan, Professor of Psychology at Rider University, and Markku Tapio Hakkinen, Director in Digital Accessibility, Accessibility Standards and Inclusive Technology Group at the US Educational Testing Service.
