The Food BioTech 2021 conference arranged by the School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems will take place on August 23-25, 2021. Leading scientists from all over the world will discuss results achieved in biotechnologies and the prospects of this field.
Scientists at ITMO University have created a system of algorithms that uses data gathered from COVID-19 patients to suggest optimal treatment for every patient. The technology was originally developed for the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, but, given the current events, the system was taught to help COVID-19 patients. The algorithms are based on Russian and international clinical protocols.
DNA structure was discovered almost 70 years ago. Nowadays, scientists are not only able to decode the genome, but also to identify the functions of each gene and its sequences, as well as edit genes and create new ones. It all became possible thanks to the development of computer technologies and a new field of studies called bioinformatics.
Team of the international laboratory “Laser Micro- and Nanotechnologies” wins Russian Science Foundation grant for fundamental research. The project is aimed at developing comprehensive methods for improving biocompatibility and bacterial resistance of medical titanium alloys, including those used in dental implants.
An international team of scientists that included researchers from ITMO University developed a software tool that makes it possible to quickly and efficiently find similar parts in the genomes of different animals, which is essential for understanding how closely related two species are, and how far they have evolved from their common ancestor. The research was published in Giga Science.
In 2020, ITMO University has launched the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity under the academic supervision of the renowned American scientist Stephen J. O’Brien. This new department is to become an important Russian center of bioinformatics, where scientists will work on collecting genomes of different living organisms and studying genetic diversity of animals and people. This work should help in fighting many diseases while also providing a better understanding of the ways in which biodiversity changes on our planet. ITMO.NEWS met with the coordinators of this emerging laboratory and learned what research they plan to do in the near future.
ITMO Researchers’ Project Named Top Innovative Product by St. Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education
A project by ITMO University’s SCAMT Industrial Lab has been named the winner of the 2019 St. Petersburg Competition of Best Innovative Projects in Science and Higher Education. The awards ceremony took place as part of the 12th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. The winning project, First Aid, is an innovative treatment for post-surgery scarring, stretch marks, cuts, and burns for patients of all ages. The project is being developed by the Master’s and PhD students of ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster. Olga Sokolovskaya, the head of the project, spoke with ITMO.NEWS about this invention, results of the team’s research, and their future plans.
