  • ITMO-Developed App Helps RAS Oceanographers Analyze Data from Drifting Buoys Offline

A student from ITMO’s Faculty of Software Engineering and Computer Systems has built an autonomous software tool to help ocean scientists at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) analyze and visualize data collected by buoys drifting in the ocean. Scientists need no programming to use the app; they can put raw data into the system to obtain a detailed picture of temperature distribution, as well as the velocity and direction of ocean currents. Furthermore, the app requires no internet connection or installed software – and can be conveniently used during expeditions. As of now, there are no existing analogs on the Russian market.

  • Open-Source AI by ITMO Developers Takes First Place at RAS Competition

The ITMO-developed software won gold in the category Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Technologies at the competition for young scientists organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Sistema Charitable Foundation. The proposed technology allows for the use of AI approaches for deeper data interpretation and a range of scientific and industrial tasks (e.g., flood forecasting or modeling of data from technical sensors).

  • ITMO University Professor Oleg Stepanov Elected a Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences

Professor Oleg Stepanov from ITMO University’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). He is actively involved in research of optimal methods for processing measurement data and its application in navigation systems design. The scientist does not only conduct research and give lectures to university students but also heads the research and educational center of Elektropribor, a leading Russian institute in the field of high-precision navigation, gyroscopy and gravimetry. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Oleg Stepanov shares his thoughts about the opportunities that the Academy’s membership opens up, the use of AI solutions in navigation systems, as well as gives advice to those just starting their career in this field.
