The Times Higher Education subject ranking in Physical Sciences includes such fields as mathematics, statistics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology and environmental sciences. 26 Russian universities are included on the ranking, of which 16 are participants of the 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project. The best results were shown by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (50th), Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (78th) and Moscow State University (96th). 8 other Russian universities are included in the ranking for the first time.

ITMO University, which made its debut in last year’s ranking in the 401-500 range, improved its standing and is now placed in the 301-400 range.

Just like last year, ITMO University’s strongest points are such indicators as industry income (76.2 points, up 7.5 from last year), international outlook (45.2 points, up 3.4 from last year) and citations (41.6 points, using Scopus data for citations in 2012-2017 for publications in relevant subject areas made in 2012-2016).

This year’s ranking includes a total of 963 universities from around the world. The full list can be seen here.

It should be noted that in order to be featured on the ranking, a university must have published at least 500 works in the corresponding subject area in the period between 2013 and 2017. In addition, no less than 5% of its staff must work in that subject area.

Times Higher Education publishes 11 subject rankings in various fields: Social sciences, Business and Economics, Engineering and technology, Computer Science, Physical sciences, Clinical, pre-clinical & health, Arts & humanities, Life sciences, Education, Psychology and Law.

All of THE’s subject rankings use the same 13 performance indicators used by the overall World University Ranking. These are split into five areas: Teaching (learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research), and Industry income (innovation).

On Wednesday November 7, in addition to the Physical Sciences ranking, the Times Higher Education agency also published its subject rankings in three other fields: Life Sciences, Psychology, and Clinical, pre-clinical & health.
