  • ITMO Participates in SPIE Photonics Europe 2018

    From April 22 to 26, SPIE Photonics Europe 2018 international conference in the field of photonics and nanotechnology took place in Strasbourg (France). ITMO University was represented by a Master’s student Yulia Raxumova and a PhD student Aysylu Kamalieva from the Department of Optical Physics and Modern Natural Science.   • Arizona University Expert: Pros and Cons of English as a Global Language

    In our global world, English is being increasingly regarded as an inevitable necessity, the common global language that everyone has to learn. The main problem with that is that native English speakers have an advantage over non-native speakers, and it feels like a new round of colonialism, noted Karen Barto, a teacher of English as a Second Language from the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University to the More than ESP conference. Ms. Barto also told ITMO.NEWS about why you can’t judge people by how they speak English and why the most important thing is to be open-minded.

  • Arizona University Expert: Why People Don’t Want to Learn Foreign Languages

    People all over the world are still reluctant to learn new languages – even English, which is commonly seen as the new global language. We spoke about this topic with Robert Cote, Director of the Writing Skills Improvement Program at the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University for the ESP Conference. Robert explained why no one can ever fully learn a language, why it’s important to start soon and why language learning can never work without tutors and group work.

  • How Can Russian Post Contribute to Smart City Development

    What can serve as a technological basis for the smart city concept? Big Data. But data is something you have to gather, meaning you have to set sensors, place cameras, maintain this equipment and analyze the information you get. Surely, all of that can be built from scratch with the help of some commercial company. The alternative solution is to use the existing resources of a governmental organization, namely the Russian Post. Maria Pavlovskaya, student at the Department of State Information Systems Management and staff member of FSUE Russian Post’s Enterprise Architecture Department, used it as the topic of her Master’s thesis that won the best article prize at the Smart Cities Conference in Bucharest.

  • METANANO-2018 Conference: How to Participate and What to Expect

    The International Conference on Metamaterials and Nanophotonics METANANO 2018 will be held for the third time on September 17-21 in Sochi. Scientists from all around the world will come together to discuss the latest scientific discoveries and achievements; approximately half of the event’s guests will come from foreign universities and research centers. The METANANO conference is becoming increasingly popular due to its large scientific scope. This leads to more interdisciplinary research and, therefore, more practical applications are made for theoretical inventions.

  • ITMO Hosts CROPS 2017: Chinese-Russian Optics & Photonics Symposium for Young Scientists

    ​From November 27 to December 6, ITMO University hosted CROPS 2017 - a Chinese-Russian symposium for young scientists in the field of optics and photonics. The event gathered 76 researchers from both countries.The Chinese side was represented by scientists from Changchun University of Science and Technology, Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Huazong University of Science and Technology, and Nankai University. Amongst the Russian participants were representatives of Orel State University, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University, Crimean Federal University, Saratov State University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and ITMO University, as well as research fellows from the Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Center.

  • WUD@ITMO: Future of Human-Machine Interaction

    On November 18, 2017 ITMO University hosted the third WUD@ITMO international conference, dedicated to design and testing of user interfaces. WUD@ITMO is timed to coincide with World Usability Day which was first celebrated in 2005. In November, a whole series of events dedicated to usability are conducted in different countries. Such events bring together specialists in the field of interface design and ergonomics, as well as students and lecturers. In 2015, on the initiative of ITMO’s Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics and Design and Multimedia Center, St. Petersburg hosted the First International Conference WUD@ITMO in collaboration with Tallinn University. This year, among the key speakers was professor Sergey Fedorovich Sergeev from  St. Petersburg State University, member of the scientific Council of RAS on the methodology of artificial intelligence and member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In his talk, he expanded on the primary objectives of usability specialists and the future formats of humanity’s integration into a technogenic environment.

    The 10th international conference for young scientists and specialists Optics-2017 has recently ended in St. Petersburg; the biennial event brings together students, scientists and representatives of the industry. At the Industrial Photonics session, experts from different Russian and international companies spoke about the latest inventions in the field of photonics, new applications of optical technologies and the prospects of their field's development.
