  • Andrey Sebrant On Machine Learning, Public Confidence and Relevant Education

    The “It’s Your Call!” Winter School that brought together the best participants of the “I am a Professional” academic competition has just ended at ITMO University. Recently, Bachelor’s and Master’s students from 33 Russian cities that showed high results in the competition’s three tracks (Computer Science, Information and cybersecurity, and Photonics). Andrey Sebrant, Product Marketing Director at Yandex and author for the @techsparks popular science channel, gave an open lecture on machine learning, the development of technology and the professions of the future. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he shared about the prospects of using machine learning and the issues related to public confidence, as well as the skills sought-after by leading IT companies and the fundamental problems of modern education.

  • DataArt Reveals The Face Of A "Typical Programmer"

    Surely, you know well the stereotype of “typical” programmer who is bearded, gloomy and always wearing a sweater? And though Steve Wozniak doesn’t look anything like Linus Torvalds, much like thousands of IT-specialists are really different from their colleagues in the way they look, most people would still use the same old attire when thinking of how a programmer looks like. Still, does one’s profession really affect one’s outward appearance? This is the question that specialists from DataArt, an international company that focuses on design, development, and support of IT solutions, tried to answer. Having analyzed several thousands of photographs featuring developers from eight different countries, the project’s authors succeeded in creating the portrait of a typical programmer.

  • ITMO and Partners Hold Open Data Hackathon

    Last weekend in St. Petersburg, ITMO University, the Open Government Initiative, and the European University’s Institute for the Rule of Law organized a hackathon on open data. The event was organized as part of the “Open Data in the Russian Federation” contest. Over two days, the teams worked with open data from state sources so as to figure out the most effective way to use that information to solve complex analytic issues and to compete for the main prize of 100,000 rubles.

  • ITMO Students Develop AI to Combat Car Insurance Fraud

    A team of students from ITMO’s Computer Technologies Department has developed an algorithm that will help identify swindlers among the clients of car insurance companies. The program is based on machine learning, and can identify whether a particular car crash was was indeed accidental. The project was developed as part of RAIF-Challenge 2017, a competition for the development of ideas for business that make use of AI and machine learning. The students were awarded with an invitation to the Russian Artificial Intelligence Forum.

  • RAISON Developers on Using AI for Financial Analysis

    On November 11 to 14, the d10e conference on financial technologies was held in Davos, Switzerland. Among the topics were FinTech, ICO, blockchain, sharing economy. RAISON, a project by ITMO’s small innovative enterprise “Intellectual Information Systems” (IIS) and Threesixty Elements S.A. was presented there. In the near future, RAISON will become an investor’s pocket assistant: the system analyses the market, news and historical data to advise users on investment strategies. The project is based on elements of the AI system AKIL.IO developed by IIS. Denis Zhuk, AKIL.IO’s sales manager and PhD student at ITMO, and Andrey Gordeychuk, head of IIS, talk about RAISON and the integration of new technologies into the investment ecosystem.

  • Programmer Daria Yakovleva: "You shouldn’t be afraid to try something new"

    Computer science isn’t just about knowing how to design algorithms, analyse data or work with functions. First and foremost, it is about creativity, which computer scientists use to solve problems that no one has solved before and to improve both household and industrial processes. Today’s Master’s programs don’t teach theoretical knowledge – Bachelor’s programs should cover that. In Master’s programs students are taught how to apply this knowledge in practice, says Daria Yakovleva, Master’s student from ITMO’s Department of Computer Technologies. We spoke to Daria about taking part in internships, competitions and activities at the university and how that can help one’s future career.

  • VK Hackathon Winners: Using New Tech to Run Online Communities

    The third Hackathon of the largest Russian social network VK was held in St. Petersburg on October 20 to 22. Compared with the events of previous years, this hackathon has become larger: the number of participants exceeded 300, winners could choose from five different areas of software development and the prize fund became one million rubles. The winners were given only 40 hours to develop their application. The winners of the category "Media" - Master’s degree students at ITMO’s Computer Technology Department Victor Khovansky and Evgeniy Varlamov (Team Traffox) - spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their software Neon and how it helps community managers monitor incoming content.

  • ITMO Student Wins Sberbank Scholarship to Develop Neural Network for Investment Planning

    Natalia Khanzhina, Ph.D. student at the Computer Technologies Department, is the recipient of a scholarship from Sberbank. The fledgling researcher took part in an IT project competition that required her to make a system that would create customized investment portfolios for customers. The program involves deep-learning technology; after completion, it will be adopted by the bank’s system while Natalia herself will have the opportunity to intern in the company’s IT department or even find employment there.

  • Algorithm Summer School: New ITMO-STC Initiative

    From August 14 to 25, ITMO hosted the first Algorithm summer school on machine learning, organized in collaboration with the STC (Speech Technology Center) IT company. Any technical student, starting with third years', as well as young scientists and specialists could participate in the school; all one had to do is pass the entrance competition.
