  • Visiting Scientist Silvio Hrabar: Why It’s Important to Find New Uses for Old Discoveries

Being a scientist doesn’t just mean going to work – it means enjoying one’s work and turning it into a lifestyle, says Silvio Hrabar, ITMO University’s visiting scientist from University of Zagreb. He is conducting research into so-called “active” metamaterials which could provide a method of removing the physical limits of metamaterials. After all, these limits are the main reason why it’s so difficult to find an application for this technology. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Silvio Hrabar shared his thoughts on how this could be achieved, what should inspire a scientist and what are the advantages of bringing together physicists and mathematicians to study metamaterials.

  • Nanotechnologies for Teenagers: How ITMO Promotes Physics

What are CD's made of? Why are butterfly wings really gray? Why don’t lotus flowers absorb water? Can one write his name nanoscale? And how much space would Tolstoy's "War and Peace" take on a sheet of paper, if written like that? At ITMO University, we know how to explain nanotechnology to children in such a way that they would know that it can be both interesting and promising for one's future career. How science enters real business and why schoolers can be better than engineers at solving particular tasks — read that and more in our article!

  • Now You Can "Solve It!" at ITMO

In a little bit more than a month the All Russian Test on Physics, Math and Informatics "Solve It!" will take place in several large Russian Universities including ITMO University. Thanks to Yandex.Contest platform it will be possible to solve 15 tasks online. The main feature of the test is that any person can try to test his or her knowledge: a businessman, a politician, an actor, a humanitarian student…its organizers believe the more people will be involved, the more popular STEM disciplines will be. "SolveIt!" will take place on February 15, 2017.

  • ITMO’s Mini-Conference on Advanced Physics

ITMO University hosted a mini-conference for first and second year students that study advanced physics. The event’s idea was to give them insight into some of the aspects of research activities and train them to present their research results. Some of their works will be presented at contests and published in science journals, noted Alexandr Chirtsov, the conference's coordinator.
