Study Reveals The Great Pyramid of Giza Can Focus Electromagnetic Energy
An international research group applied methods of theoretical physics to study the electromagnetic response of the Great Pyramid to radio waves. Scientists found out that under resonance conditions the pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy both in its internal chambers and the area located under its base. The research group plans to apply these findings to design nanoparticles capable of reproducing similar effects in the optical range. Such nanoparticles may be used to develop sensors and highly efficient solar cells. The study was published in the Journal of Applied Physics.

Track the Growth of Scoliosis using Mathematical Models
Musculoskeletal system diseases do not only worsen the quality of life but they can also lead to other diseases, including cardiovascular ones. Scoliosis is one of the most common musculoskeletal system diseases. Researchers from ITMO’s Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials and Department of Advanced Mathematics together with the Ogonek Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology Center (Strelna), headed by Mikhail Dudin, are working on a physical and mathematical model of scoliosis that will help doctors more accurately diagnose the disease.

What to Expect from a Master’s Program at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering
This year, the Faculty of Physics and Engineering at ITMO University is accepting applications for its Master’s degree programs “Radiofrequency Systems and Devices” and “Nanophotonics and Metamaterials” which were launched the previous year. We spoke to students who enrolled last year to find out what to expect from Master’s studies at the faculty and what research students get to take part in.

Physicist Yuri Kivshar on Russian Science, Career Management and Metaoptics
Seven years ago, ITMO University launched the Metamaterials Laboratory. It all began with a grant won by Yuri Kivshar, a world-class scientist and one of Russia’s top physicists. Since then, the university has also launched the Department, and later, the International Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. Under Yuri Kivshar’s leadership, the center’s researchers were the first in the world to venture into a completely new field: dielectric nanophotonics, or, as the scientist calls it, “metaoptics”. ITMO.NEWS met with Yuri Kivshar during his latest visit to St. Petersburg to discuss his current work, the future of the most unorthodox field of nanophotonics, and why a scientist shouldn’t stick with the same field of study for their entire life.

Physicists Discover Way to Control Transitions Between States of Matter
An international team of physicists has managed for the first time to experimentally observe a transition between two different states of matter: a propagating polariton-soliton and a Bose-Einstein condensate. Furthermore, the researchers developed a theoretical model to explain such transitions and found a way to “switch” between the different states by changing the laser pumping power in the polariton formation process. The results are published in Physical Review Letters.

Physicists Propose New Mechanism of Radio Emission in Neutron Stars
Young scientists from ITMO University have explained how neutron stars generate intense directed radio emission. They developed a model based on the transitions of particles between gravitational states, i.e. quantum states in gravitational field. The researchers were the first to describe such states for electrons on the surface of neutron stars. Physical parameters obtained with the developed model are consistent with real experimental observations. The results are published in The Astrophysical Journal.
