  • ITMO Physicists Discover Way to Achieve Stimulated Raman Scattering in Isolated Silicon Nanoparticles

    An optimized design of silicon nanoparticles provides а more efficient transition from spontaneous to stimulated Raman scattering. The proposed approach also allowed researchers to reduce the size and volume of particles supporting the stimulated Raman scattering regime by tens of times compared to their existing counterparts. The researchers also designed a platform in the form of a silicon nanoparticle on a sapphire surface that can be applied in sensing, detection, and thermometry, opening up new opportunities for future applications in biomedicine, targeted drug delivery, and as an alternative to electronic devices in optical chips. The results of the research were published in Nano Letters.

  • Why is Quantum Physics so Hard to Understand?

    Quantum mechanics is deemed the hardest part of physics. Systems with quantum behavior don’t follow the rules that we are used to, they are hard to see and hard to “feel”, can have controversial features, exist in several different states at the same time - and even change depending on whether they are observed or not.   • ITMO Graduate and UbiQD’s Senior Director of Physics Nikolay Makarov: A Scientist’s Interests Must Always Be In Flux

    Nikolay Makarov was a student at ITMO University in the late ‘90s to early ‘00s. In that time, his scientific interests shifted from programming to experimental physics. His work caught the attention of an American university, where he eventually got his PhD. Since then, Nikolay has lived in the US, having worked at various universities, research institutes, and even at the Los Alamos National Lab. Today, he works at UbiQD, a private manufacturer of quantum dots. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Nikolay and learned about his story, why young scientists don’t stick around for long at American universities, and the prospects of US-Russian scientific collaboration.

  • Reach Out and Touch Science: Sirius Conference Participants at ITMO University

    From February 10 to 15, five students from Moscow, Kazan and Saint Petersburg took part in an internship at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering at ITMO University.   • Daniil Sharov on Being a Physicist and a Science Communicator

    Daniil Sharov received his Bachelor’s degree as a teacher of physics, but decided to continue his studies after graduation and got into ITMO’s Master’s program in science communication. These days, he is working at ITMO University’s Museum of Optics, teaching at ITMO.KIDS while also developing a system for evaluating the efficiency of exhibitions at science museums.   • ITMO Scientists Help School Team Win ICCET 2019

    Seven teams became winners of the International Contest of Engineering Teams “Kvantoriada 2019” (ICCET 2019) that took place in Moscow at the end of last year.   • ITMO University Physicists Discover Proof of Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek’s Time Crystal Hypothesis

    Two ITMO University physicists – PhD student Valerii Kozin and ITMO Fellow Oleksandr Kyriienko – have described genuine time crystals in an article in Physical Review Letters. These structures’ existence was first suggested by Frank Wilczek, laureate of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, but other studies have asserted the impossibility of creating environments in which these crystals would exist. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Valerii Kozin to find out what time crystals really are, how the two scientists were able to prove the existence of a system in which they would exist, and what Einstein has got to do with it.
