• Scientists Create New IR-Activated Coating for Local Drug Delivery

  The coating is based on active substances, in particular, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), loaded into the titania layer and modified by polypyrrole. If this coating is fabricated on the implant surface, it is possible to accelerate the injury recovery and to control this process using infrared radiation (IR).

• ITMO Researchers Create Unique Wound-Healing Nanofibers Based on Hyaluronic Acid

  Researchers from the International Scientific and Research Institute of Bioengineering are the first to obtain nanofiber based on hyaluronic acid with introduced curcumin and usnic acid, natural biologically active substances. Such nanofibers can be used to create wound dressings for treatment of melanomas, burns, and ulcers.

• At the Intersection of Biology, Chemistry, and IT: New Participants of ITMO Fellowship & Professorship Program on Their Research at ITMO

  How to make scientists, constantly cooped up in their laboratories, communicate more and find new points of contact for joint work at the intersection of several fields of knowledge? This question is especially topical for those who work on fixed-term contracts or as part of an exchange and are thus especially intent on spending all their time on work. • ITMO University Among Leaders of 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project

  On October 25-26, 2019 the Council on Global Competitiveness Enhancement of Russian Universities (Project 5-100) convened for its 12th session in Moscow. Over the course of two days, universities participating in Project 5-100 presented the results of their work and their development plans for the future. Upon conclusion of the session, the project’s participants were sorted into three groups, ITMO University being ranked among the top 7.

• ITMO Researchers Develop Fast and Simple Perovskite Nanolaser Creation Method

  Using the new method, scientists can synthesize perovskite nanolasers, which combine an optically active medium with a Fabry–Pérot high-Q resonator, in just five minutes. The nanolasers’ simple synthesis process and their unique optical qualities make them highly promising sources of coherent radiation in the development of high-sensitivity optical sensors and ultra-fast data transfer in photonic integrated circuits. Results of this research have been published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

  On February 8, the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art will host the ITMO Open Science Conference. The event will bring together ITMO University’s researchers, PhD students and heads of the University’s departments, who will talk about the latest achievements in an unusual format. The conference’s mission is to provide a platform for efficient communication and knowledge exchange between the University’s schools and faculties.

• Project Session at Sirius: Implants, Security and Nano-Shampoo

  This summer, the Sirius educational center for talented children in Sochi has held its usual session on project work, followed by the Nanograd summer school. ITMO University’s team, including specialists and postgraduate students from the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials and staff of Technopark resident, company NT-SPb, took part.
