• Best Practice-Oriented Projects by ITMO Students Announced

  ITMO University’s contest for best practice-oriented student R&D projects concluded in early April with a series of project defenses. Nine winners were selected from 30 presented projects; they will receive funding and support in bureaucratic, organizational, and team management matters.

• Jack and Jill: Researchers Develop Novel Test to Efficiently Measure Human Cognitive Abilities

  An international team of researchers, including Maxim Likhanov, a laureate of the ITMO Fellowship and Professorship program, has created a new visual test called The Jack & Jill Working Memory Task. The new testing system has already been employed to investigate the relationships between working memory and musical abilities, academic performance and behavioral problems. • ITMO Scientists Propose a New Model for Study of Bone Development

  The proposed model allows researchers to understand how certain substances can influence the formation and development of bone cells. This knowledge is useful both in fundamental biological research and in the creation of new ways to prevent osteoporosis and other diseases. Moreover, the model can be used to design smart wound-healing materials.

• ITMO Researchers Teach Neural Network to Tell Jokes

  Computers can outperform people in many fields – but, it seemed, not in the art of making jokes. ITMO University researchers decided to try and dispute this claim. This year, to celebrate April Fools’ Day they taught GPT-3, the world’s most powerful text-generating algorithm, to make jokes. Now anyone on the internet can test the results of their work.

• ITMO Researchers Suggest New Way to Improve Quantum Encryption in Optical Fiber Communication Lines

  Staff members of the Laboratory of Quantum Processes and Measurements have found the cause of errors that occur on subcarrier frequencies in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems – as well as a way to eliminate it. Their research was published in Optics Express.

• ITMO Researchers Win Grant for Development of Smart Glasses Components

  The scientists will develop a method for the development of waveguides invisible to the naked eye and which will make it possible to transmit images onto transparent glass and polymer surfaces. It will also be possible to use the same technology to create sensors useful in the production of protective eyewear for workers in hazardous occupations.

• Scientists Create New IR-Activated Coating for Local Drug Delivery

  The coating is based on active substances, in particular, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), loaded into the titania layer and modified by polypyrrole. If this coating is fabricated on the implant surface, it is possible to accelerate the injury recovery and to control this process using infrared radiation (IR).

• ITMO Researchers Create Unique Wound-Healing Nanofibers Based on Hyaluronic Acid

  Researchers from the International Scientific and Research Institute of Bioengineering are the first to obtain nanofiber based on hyaluronic acid with introduced curcumin and usnic acid, natural biologically active substances. Such nanofibers can be used to create wound dressings for treatment of melanomas, burns, and ulcers.
