  The names of winners of the Presidential Grant contest have been announced. Among them are four ITMO University scientists. ITMO.NEWS talked to the researchers and learned what projects they are going to spend their grants on.

• Awardees of 2018-2019 Potanin Scholarship Reveal Their Winning Hacks

  The results of the 2018-2019 Vladimir Potanin scholarship contest have just been announced. Among the 500 awardees are 30 Master’s students of ITMO University. ITMO.NEWS met several lucky winners to talk the projects the judges liked more than the others, and to learn why just being yourself is the best tactic for winning the contest.

• ITMO Young Scientists Win BASIS Foundation Grants For Physics and Maths Research

  This year’s list of winners of grants from the BASIS Foundation for the Advancement of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics includes six representatives of ITMO University. These are research associates Andrei Bogdanov and Maxim Gorlach, and  PhD  students Daniil  Kornovan , Kirill Koshelev, Nikita Olekhno and Zarina  Sadrieva  from the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. The BASIS foundation is a successor of Dmitry Zimin’s Dynasty Foundation that concluded its activity in 2015. Many former holders of Dynasty scholarships, like ITMO members Andrei Bogdanov and Alexander Poddubny, are currently holders of BASIS scholarships.

• Fulbright Recipient Vasiliy Leonenko on His Research in US

  Vasiliy Leonenko, Associate Professor at the High-Performance Computing Department, spent over a year in the USA on a Fulbright program. Working in Durham, North Carolina, he collaborated with specialists from RTI International, a major US research organization specializing in synthetic populations, on a detailed dynamic model of the spread of influenza in St. Petersburg. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he talked about his project and the peculiarities of working in the USA.

• Holographic Quantum Dot Laser in Progress

  How can we make a laser that will work effectively on low pump energy, be quite small and will allow dynamically changing the output radiation spectrum?  Vladimir Borisov, a  PhD  student at ITMO’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies, has won a grant of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research for creating just such a laser. One of the advantages of the new device is that the resonator is placed in the active laser medium, which simplifies the design while changing the resonator itself; it is created by  holographic  grating and uses quantum dots as photon sources.

• ITMO Master’s Students Develop Lung Diagnostics Device

  Master’s students from ITMO University have proposed the use of convolutional neural networks for automatic wheeze detection in lung sounds. The project called LungDiagnostics (Laeneco) concerns the development of an electronic stethoscope is used to detect and monitor wheezing. The results of the research have been published in an article in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, while the developers have been awarded a grant by the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises in Science and Technology.

• ITMO Begins Research on Carbon Nanodot Synthesis Methods

  The Russian Government has awarded Professor Andrey Rogach and ITMO University’s International Research and Education Center for Physics of Nanostructures with a “megagrant*” to facilitate the creation of the Laboratory “Light-emitting Carbon Quantum Nanostructures”. There, scientists will study new methods for synthesis of carbon nanodots, which are expected to find use in LEDs and for the purpose of biomedical sensing, i.e. the analysis of chemical substances in living tissue. These new eco-friendly structures will greatly fit into today’s popular “green” nanophotonics concept

• ITMO University Creates First Virtual Museum of Russian Architecture

  Specialists from ITMO’s Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics and the Design and Multimedia Center will create a 3D reconstructed version of the Feodorovsky Settlement in Tsarskoe Selo. The ensemble was constructed in 1917 on orders of the last Russian Emperor, Nicholas II and was intended to serve as a “live” museum of the Russian architectural style. The interiors, however, were lost during World War II. Now, thanks to virtual technology, they will be recreated and made available to all. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Roerich Family Museum-Institute, Russian Academy of Arts’ restoration workshop and I.P. Shmelev’s architecture workshop.
