    As much as we want to give credit where it’s due, we have to admit that there’s no balance of power in Japanese animation, no level-playing field, no equal footings. Take a look at any best-anime list and what you’ll see will be one director and one animation studio calling the shots, and for a good reason. There’s no task more difficult for a cinephile that to pick a favorite out of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s movies, but here’s our attempt; just be mindful of the fact that all of their works are a wealth of unique cinematic experiences, and we heartily recommend you give them a go!

  • Laeneco Founder Ilya Skorobogatov: How to Take the Japanese Market by Storm

    This February, the team behind the telemedical healthcare startup Laeneco won a pitch session organized by ITMO University’s Technopark together with Japanese business experts. This victory gave them the opportunity to bring their hi-tech device for monitoring lung conditions to Fukuoka (Japan), where they participated in the prestigious WARAKU SUMMIT. The project has already made its entrance on the Japanese market, having received the backing of the country’s government. ITMO.NEWS met with Laeneco’s founder Ilya Skorobogatov to find out why the Land of the Rising Sun is so receptive to telemedical services and why launching on the Japanese market is often much easier than doing the same in Europe or the US.

  • Disability and Accessible Environment: Participants of Exchange Program on Japan’s Best Practices

    Twelve students and faculty members of ITMO University have recently taken part in the Japanese-Russian exchange program that focused on working with disabled people. The week-long exchange program was organized by the Japan Russia Youth Exchange Center with support from the Japanese Embassy in St. Petersburg. In Tokyo, the participants of the exchange program attended training sessions, visited rehabilitation centers, studied the approaches to creating an accessible environment for people with disabilities in museums and public transport, and even visited their homes. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Andrey Zlenko, Head of the Department for the Development of Student Initiatives, and Natalya Startseva, graduate of the “People Need You!” program, spoke about the Japanese technologies that have to do with developing an accessible environment for people with disabilities, and the difference between volunteering activities in Russia and Japan.

The Land of the Rising Sun welcomed them with impeccable politeness, strict social hierarchy, caring attitude towards nature and urban environment.   • ITMO Students Study Monodzukuri at Kindai University

    ITMO University continues to establish academic cooperation with one of Japan’s largest universities, the Kindai University. This partnership is made possible by support from Monodzukuri, the Japanese government's project that encourages  exchange  of experience and the training of professionals in high-tech and natural sciences fields for the Russian-Japanese business. As part of this program, ITMO students Andrei Palshin and Ivan Bereznoy, as well as head of the Mechatronics Department Sergey Kolyubin spent two weeks on an introductory internship in Kindai University.

    This August, students from ITMO University have the opportunity to go to Japan as part of a Japanese-Russian youth exchange program. Nearly all of the trip expenses are covered by the receiving country; all the students have to do is to apply for it and wait.   • Japanese Exchange Students Share Impressions of Russia

    ITMO University was visited by 18 students from 10 Japanese universities as part of a Japanese-Russian youth exchange program. The program was initiated by Junior Chamber International Japan, which also invited ITMO University to participate in the program for the 8th time. Earlier, a group of 18 Russian students, including students from ITMO University, had gone on a similar trip to Japan. During their visit to Russia, the guests from the Land of the Rising Sun were given a tour of ITMO University and went sightseeing in St. Petersburg. They also spent five days in Moscow where they learned about the Russian higher education system. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, they shared their impressions from their first-ever visit to Russia.

  • Russian-Japanese Exchange Program: Participants Share

    This is the 8th time that ITMO students have participated in the Russian-Japanese exchange program. This year, 18 students from ITMO University, Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University took part in it; with just as many participating from Japan. Part of the time, the students lived with Japanese families, thus getting the opportunity to acquaint themselves with Japanese everyday life and culture; after spending a week traveling around the country, the students shared their experience with ITMO.NEWS.
