  • ITMO Fellow Ilya Anoshkin on Nanotubes and Working Abroad

    Terahertz technologies hail a new era where blood tests are much more accurate, and Internet faster. All this is thanks to nanomaterials and their unique properties. One of the leading researchers in this field, Ilya Anoshkin joined ITMO University’s teaching staff via the ITMO Fellowship program. In spite of his extensive and successful experience of working in Finland and Sweden, he is reluctant to call himself a scientist. ITMO.NEWS met Ilya to find out why, and to talk about the technologies of the future and his take on teaching at ITMO.

  • Dining with Laureates: ITMO PhD Student Shares His Experience of the Sixth Heidelberg Forum

    Every year, young scientists from all over the world come to the German city of Heidelberg to take part in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), a networking event for young mathematicians and computer scientists willing to meet with the world’s leading researchers in these fields. To be allowed to participate, young scientists have to undergo a rigorous selection process, but if you succeed, you are given an opportunity to not only listen to laureates’ speeches but also talk to them in person in an informal setting. Besides, participants can showcase their own ideas and get an expert opinion. Javlon Isomurodov, a PhD student from ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, also partake in the forum. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he talks about how the selection process is organized and what opportunities the forum brings to young scientists.

  • Transcending Humanity: Evolution of Technological Art

    Last week, the first FUTURE ART festival was held in St. Petersburg. The event explored the cutting-edge sphere of BioArt, an Art&Science current encompassing the synthesis of artistic, scientific, creative, and technological methods of contemporary art-making. BioArt adherents work with live materials and organic processes. In her FUTURE ART lecture, art expert and head of ITMO’s Art & Science Center Anastasiia Yarmosh talked about how the technological art changed over the years, in which direction it is now heading, and what questions it deals with today.

  • University of Memphis’ Zabihollah Rezaee on Sustainability and Ethics in Business

    Professor Zabihollah Rezaee, the Thompson-Hill Chair of Excellence and PhD coordinator at the University of Memphis (USA), has given a series of lectures on the topic “Sustainable Business Development, Corporate Management and Professional Ethics” at ITMO University’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations. Master’s and PhD students had the unique opportunity to do a two-week international internship without leaving St. Petersburg and attend the course offered at the world’s top universities. Prof. Rezaee spoke to ITMO.NEWS about his course, the growing importance of professional ethics and how networking made him come to Russia.

  • The History of Light in Art

    For a long time, light was only seen as a functional element of everyday life. Over time, artists have begun to study its properties, the ways it can accentuate shapes and textures. In the 20th century, it became its own “character” in art, architecture, theater and performance art. Caty Olive, a light designer and artist from France, spoke about the history of people’s relationship with light at a lecture in St. Petersburg. The event took place at Alexandrinsky Theatre’s New Stage, supported by ITMO University’s Higher School of Lighting Design.

  • Chaika Creative Space Opens at ITMO University

    The CHAIKA creative space was opened last week at ITMO University’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations. This space will become a platform for the creative development of students and anyone interested in taking part. CHAIKA is already a venue to the Sunny Petersburg photo exhibition, where visitors can see works by members of the “Art Petersburg” photo community.

  • Art, Love and Depression: How Your Brain Controls Your Life

    Research shows that our brains make decisions up to 10 seconds before we realize it. The subconscious mind is often associated with something mystical, as if decisions are something that can’t be felt or detected. But from a scientific standpoint, decisions are just a result of chemical and biological processes in the brain. Each of these decisions is the result of a competition between the brain cells, natural selection-style. Ilya Martynov, head of neural therapy for children with ADHD at the Brain Development Center, spoke about the brain’s decision process, formation of interests and how to concentrate, at a speaking session as part of the “Brain: Universe Inside Us” project.

Among the speakers for the event was Saskia Beer, a Dutch entrepreneur and urban scientist; in her presentation, she explained why it is that collaboration of government, business and citizens is most important for sustainable development of the urban environment, and shared about how it is possible to give a new life to economically ineffective districts while not having much resources and support at the initial stages
