• Popularization Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Fighting Pseudoscience with Science-Pop

  Convening in autumn this year, a session of the executive committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) announced the creation of the Popularization Committee, a new and important player in Russia's science popularization field. Its functions include controlling the quality of articles being published, combating scientific shams, and organizing new science-pop events and formats; and these are just some of the seven areas the RAS identified for the new committee’ scope of work. Alexandra Borissova, a senior lecturer at ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office and president of the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON), became a member of the RAS Committee. • Science Fest: Future is Here

  Science Fest, a grandiose celebration of science, has yet again been hosted in St. Petersburg. Held on September 22-23, the event spread over ten unique spaces in the city: the usual Planetarium and Lumiere Hall were joined by the museums of optics, cosmonautics, and railway transport, the Lenpoligraphmash creative space, the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, and the landmark Annenkirche church. The extensive program reflected the festival’s key message: science is a valued contributor to all aspects of our life.

• Nobel Prize Laureate Andre Geim: ‘Science is a Lifelong Marathon, Not a 100-Meter Sprint’

  In 2010, Sir Andre Geim was awarded a Nobel Prize in physics for his groundbreaking work on graphene. It was his discoveries that led to the wonder material’s active proliferation in science and industry alike. Prof. Geim continues his revolutionary work on two-dimensional materials as part of his research group in the University of Manchester. The famed scientist presented his latest findings at the 2018 METANANO conference in Sochi and gave this exclusive interview to ITMO.NEWS and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology’s ‘For Science’ corporate journal, where he talked about why he doesn’t think that lifelong devotion to one scientific field is a good idea, what motivates young researchers to take the leap into fundamental science, and why scholars need to learn to communicate their findings to the wider audience.

• Geography for All: Why Science Popularization Matters

  “Geography for All”, an international summer school hosted by the Russian Geographical Society, has just wrapped up at ITMO University. This year, the event was dedicated to popularization of geography. Over the course of a week, students from all over Russia and the CIS countries attended a whirlwind of lectures and workshops of renowned bloggers, science communicators, globetrotters, and public figures, who shared their tips and tricks for making science buzz. The summer school is the first milestone of cooperation between ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office and the Russian Geographical Society aimed at popularization of geography. This partnership gives ITMO’s Master’s students access to an expert community of leading geographers, which will be invaluable for developing new science communication tools.

• Science Comics: New Format of Science Communication

  How does one translate an expedition log into the popular language of comic strips? Is it possible to combine comics and science? Sure! And by the way, this is how one of the most successful science communication formats came about. It hasn’t been long since science comics appeared in Russia, but they have already become popular with both editors and the public. At the recent workshop that was part of the Russian Geographical Society’s summer school hosted by ITMO University, Alena Lesnyak, editor of the “Schrodinger’s Cat” popular science magazine, editor in chief of the oLogy portal on science and scenarist of science comics spoke about their prospects, popularity, and mission.
