  • ITMO Student and Sirius & Rosneft Joint Program Moderator Yulia Shutova: Don’t Say Something Is Impossible, Just That It’s Needed to Be Done

    ITMO University first-year Master’s student Yulia Shutova was invited by the Sirius research and education center to become one of the moderators of its program for school students, implemented by the center in collaboration with the Rosneft company. As part of the program, school students take part in the development of IT concepts for the tasks faced by the company, one of the leaders of the oil market. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Yulia to find out what lessons she got from working with children, how VR technologies could be of use in oil production and how her Master’s project helped in solving one of the tasks set by Rosneft.

  • ITMO Scientists’ Project for Facilitating Transition to Industry 4.0 Wins Grant of Russian Foundation for Basic Research and Sirius Center

    The Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the “Talent and Success” educational foundation (the Sirius center) have announced the results of their joint contest “Scientific mentorship”. This contest is aimed at supporting fundamental research conducted by young scientists working under the guidance of experienced researchers. Among the teams applying for the contest was a research group from ITMO University, who develop distributed finite-state machines for controlling robotic factories, sorting centers and other similar systems. Designed to help companies make the transition to industry 4.0 standards, their project got the organizers’ support and joined the winners’ ranks. ITMO.NEWS spoke to a representative of the project group to find out exactly how the scientists’ work will help the companies.

  • Conference School on Photonics, Radio Physics and Nanotechnologies at Sirius

    The second Conference School on Photonics, Radio Physics and Nanotechnologies took place in Sochi from November 2 to 5. The event was organized by the Sirius educational center in collaboration with ITMO University; scientists from Jean Lamour Institute (France) acted as invited speakers.   • Creating a University of the Future in Seven Days: Big Challenges Summit in Sochi

    From October 28 to November 3, the Russian city of Sochi hosted the “Big Challenges for Society, State and Science” summit. Organized by the educational center “Sirius”, the event annually brings together talented students and young PhD researchers from all over the country. This year, the summit’s participants not only attended lectures and workshops by leading tech companies, but also developed their own projects for a university of the future in just seven days. Helping them in this endeavor was a team of ITMO University specialists, ten experts in the fields of science communication, cybersecurity, sociology of science, biotechnologies and cyberphysical systems.   • Serious Science: How School Students Create Projects at Sirius and Develop Them Under the Guidance of ITMO

    This summer, dozens of Russian school students came to Sirius to work on projects in 12 different tracks, from Nanotechnology to Cognitive Studies, New Materials and Smart cities. Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering participated in the program as mentors and project developers. With their guidance, the students developed breakthrough nanostructured antibacterial surfaces and a metalens for focusing Wi-Fi radiation. To continue working on their projects, the students came to ITMO where they not only attended lectures but also got a chance to visit ITMO’s many laboratories and work on real-life lab equipment.   • Academy of Talents: ITMO’s Specialists from Institute of Design & Urban Studies Host Lectures for School Students

    St. Petersburg’s Academy of Talents has hosted Live City, a specialized educational program on urban science and design for school students. Participating as experts of the projects were the staff of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies. The specialists contributed with a series of introductory lectures and held interactive workshops. This should help the 9-to-11-graders to find a relevant topic for team research work that they could then present at the national competition of scientific and technological projects “Big Challenges” in the track “Smart City”.

  • SciComm at Sirius: ITMO Graduates Help Kids Explore Science and Art

    ITMO University’s Center for Science Communication and the Sirius Educational Center are intensifying their collaboration in the field of science communication: during workshops organized at the Center by ITMO graduates, school students learned about science communication and Art&Science and took part in discussions on technological modification of the human genome. Throughout the next year, more ITMO University students are expected to travel to Sochi to take part in similar initiatives.

  • Grad Platforma: User-Driven City Events Aggregator

    The students of the Sirius education center under the guidance of ITMO’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies specialists have created the open-access service Grad Platforma, which allows its users to add, search, and promote various events in the city. The platform aggregates events not only of the cultural but also of the administration and maintenance profile. The project was developed as part of the scientific-technological and educational program “Big Challenges”, held at Sirius on July 1-24, 2019.

  • SPIEF 2019: Speakers Discuss Achievements and Problems of Russian Education

    At the recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF’19), speakers discussed not just economics but also how the agenda of Russian education plays into the country’s general social environment. During one of the discussions, experts in the field of education expanded on such topics as the achievements and problems of the state’s educational system in the past ten years, the advantages and drawbacks of educational selectivity, whether the profession of a teacher is really necessary, and why Soviet-style broad education is no longer efficient. We wrote down the highlights of the discussion.
