Track the Growth of Scoliosis using Mathematical Models
Musculoskeletal system diseases do not only worsen the quality of life but they can also lead to other diseases, including cardiovascular ones. Scoliosis is one of the most common musculoskeletal system diseases. Researchers from ITMO’s Department of Nano-Photonics and Metamaterials and Department of Advanced Mathematics together with the Ogonek Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology Center (Strelna), headed by Mikhail Dudin, are working on a physical and mathematical model of scoliosis that will help doctors more accurately diagnose the disease.

Stress Tolerance, Life Skills and Guaranteed University Places: Winners of Maths Academic Competition on Why They Decided to Participate
This year, ‘Formula of Unity / Third Millennium’ Maths academic competition celebrates its twentieth anniversary. This annual event brings together thousands of people from all over the world; from 4,500 of the 2018 participants 1,080 have reached the final stage and 360 won first, second, and third prizes. ITMO.NEWS met the winners in order to find out how they got into Maths, in which competitions they participate, and who they want to become.

ITMO Team Shows Great Results at 10th Internet Mathematics Olympiad for Students
From October 16 to 19, the Ariel University in Israel hosted the Super Final of 10th International Internet Mathematics Olympiad; this was the first time that ITMO University students participated in this event, which brought together over a hundred students from 24 universities around the world.

ICM-2017: ITMO Team Shows Great Results
The 24th annual International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC-2017) has recently taken place in Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria). ITMO University was represented by five students; each of them was awarded a diploma: Gennadiy Korotkevich was awarded a First Prize diploma, Dmitriy Yakutov - a Second Prize diploma and Alexei Latyshev brought home a Third Prize award.

Pure Math at ITMO: Students from 11 Countries Took Part in the NCUMC
On April 22-24 ITMO opened its doors for the North Countries Universities Mathematical Competition (NCUMC). Regardless of its title, students from all countries can participate in the competition – this year the event welcomed representatives of Argentina. ITMO’s team was placed 2nd,students fromS t. Petersburg State University showed the best results.

MathCompetitions: Experienced Participants Answer FAQ
The Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition, which is considered the unofficial European Mathematical Championship, took place at the beginning of April. To solve even one task is a wonderful result! This year, several ITMO’s students took part in the competition. Gennady Korotkevich, who placed 2nd and his colleagues Alexey Latyshev and Dmitry Yakutov talk about the strategies they use to do their best.
