  • Project-Based Master’s Program – ITMO’s Higher School of Engineering Offers a New Approach to Education

It often happens that students graduate from universities equipped with profound theoretical knowledge but with no experience of applying it in practice. That leads them to spend several years adapting to the actual labor market conditions instead of using their full potential in their field.

  • All-Russian NTI Engineering Competition: Young Engineers’ Budding Talent

Participants of the All-Russian NTI Engineering Contest were given a chance to take on the role of space engineers, design houses of the future and solve problems at the intersection of biology and nanotechnology and much more. The competition’s assignments were grouped into 17 different profiles. ITMO developed one of them: the "Nanosystems and nanoengineering" track. It was a joint project together with Moscow colleagues. Two main features of the competition are its project orientation and teamwork. Schoolkids from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan competed against each other in two rounds. Contestants who showed the best results are going to the Sirius Educational Center in Sochi for finals, where they will have to solve problems that were designed in accordance with the requirements of modern high-tech industries. • Visiting Scientist Silvio Hrabar: Why It’s Important to Find New Uses for Old Discoveries

Being a scientist doesn’t just mean going to work – it means enjoying one’s work and turning it into a lifestyle, says Silvio Hrabar, ITMO University’s visiting scientist from University of Zagreb. He is conducting research into so-called “active” metamaterials which could provide a method of removing the physical limits of metamaterials. After all, these limits are the main reason why it’s so difficult to find an application for this technology. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Silvio Hrabar shared his thoughts on how this could be achieved, what should inspire a scientist and what are the advantages of bringing together physicists and mathematicians to study metamaterials.
