ITMO Scientists Develop Novel Hybrid Material to Prevent Post-Surgical Infection
Even though medicine has made huge strides in recent years, around 10-20% of all patients still fall victim to infection-related postoperative complications caused by sterilization issues or overly resistant bacteria in hospitals. Since infection sites are typically hard to detect, researchers from ITMO’s SCAMT Institute have created a new suture material that will make it possible to track the spread of infection in real time.

Researcher Ekaterina Maslova on Fundamental Studies and Working with School Students
Ekaterina Maslova, a third-year student at the School of Physics and Engineering, does fundamental research: she studies bound states in the continuum and quasicrystals entering the metamaterial regime. At the same time, she’s engaged in scientific projects with university and school students. Ekaterina shared why she chose to work in this field, what it’s like to do fundamental research, and how important it is to involve school students in research.

ITMO Scientists Find a Way to Reconfigure Topological States of Light
A research team from ITMO University, Australian National University, and Jilin University has provided experimental proof of the conjecture that topological states of light can be produced not only by influencing the crystal lattice geometry but also by changing the shape of the meta-atoms and their mutual orientation. Moreover, the new approach helps change the position and the degree of light localization in real time.

How ITMO Trains Specialists in Public Health Sciences
Last year, the university’s Center for Science Communication launched Russia’s first-ever English-language Master’s program in public health sciences. Its students train to become specialists in medical research, epidemiology, healthcare, and health economy. The program’s first students are already participating in major medical research. We spoke to Anton Barchuk, an oncoepidemiologist and head of the program, and Ksenia Spiridonova, the program’s coordinator, about the program and its benefits.

ITMO Scientists Develop Nanostructured Temperature Indicator Based on Carbon Dots and Nanocellulose
Researchers from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster and University of Toronto discovered a nonlinear dependence of photoluminescence of carbon dots on the composition of a water and dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. The color of the same dot sample changes depending on the polarity of solvent it is placed in. Thanks to this discovery, the researchers were able to develop a portable wide-range (from -68°C to +19°C) temperature indicator, which can be used to control the storage conditions of chemical, pharmaceutical, and food products.

How Sport Affects Our Cognitive Skills
Moderate physical exercise boosts our energy by improving blood flow, raising blood sugar levels, and increasing the number of certain neurotransmitters in our brain. However, research shows that non-professional sports can positively affect not only our resource supply, but our cognitive skills, too. Is it true for all ages and health conditions? How long does it actually take to see results from exercise? And which mechanisms lay behind this process? Read on to learn what scientists from ITMO’s Center for Neuroscience in Education who have recently launched a project on students' mental well-being have to say about these and other related questions.

ITMO Scientists Train Neural Networks to Determine Solution Concentration Via Air Bubbles
Researchers from ITMO’s Infochemistry Scientific Center have devised an algorithm that can identify the concentration of water-alcohol solutions based on the shape of air bubbles. These bubbles can arise in liquids due to multiple factors, such as ultrasound. They do not remain stable and their shape can change. The scientists studied air bubbles to prove that they behave differently in solutions with various concentrations, as well as trained a neural network to record these changes and detect a solution’s concentration based on its bubble image. This can potentially help scientists take real-time measurements of the composition and concentration of various industrial raw materials.
