• Open Letter to Presidential Adviser on Internet from ITMO University’s Rector

  On April 16, 2018, the Roskomnadzor federal agency initiated its blocking of the messenger app Telegram in Russia. In addition to Telegram’s servers, the Federal Agency for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media expanded its list of blocked web-addresses with more than 18 million IP-addresses belonging to Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Digital Ocean. The attempt to block a single platform resulted in complications with a wide range of third-party websites, used on an everyday basis by people in different fields of work. Scientists and professors at universities and research centers are experiencing delays and complications in their work. Concerned with the current situation, ITMO University’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev has written a letter to German Klimenko, the Presidential Adviser on Internet Development, in which he addressed the current situation and suggested that the process be discontinued. • Arizona University Expert: Pros and Cons of English as a Global Language

  In our global world, English is being increasingly regarded as an inevitable necessity, the common global language that everyone has to learn. The main problem with that is that native English speakers have an advantage over non-native speakers, and it feels like a new round of colonialism, noted Karen Barto, a teacher of English as a Second Language from the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University to the More than ESP conference. Ms. Barto also told ITMO.NEWS about why you can’t judge people by how they speak English and why the most important thing is to be open-minded.

• Russia Secures ACM ICPC-2018 World Champion Title

  On April 19, Beijing hosted the final round of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. The World Cup will once again travel to Russia - although, this time, to Moscow. This year’s world champion is Moscow State University; the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology was also awarded a gold medal. ITMO University’s team, a record-holding seven-time world champion, won the bronze. Overall, 4 Russian teams are present among this year’s 13 winners.

• Winners of National Competition to go to RoboCup Asia-Pacific

  The RoboCup Russia Open robotics championships was held for the third time, in Tomsk, where 118 teams from 11 regions in Russia participated. For three days, from 13 to 15 April, at the site of the national stage of world robotic championships RoboCup, various robots competed: lifeguards, football players, actors. The school team of ITMO University participated for the first time in the category Humanoid KidSize Soccer League (university level) and took first place.

• Danish Exchange Students Developing Lighting Design Solution for St. Petersburg Park

  How does lighting design help reflect natural occurrences in the urban environment and make the latter more accommodating for people? Beata Kublik and Paulina Dudkiewicz, Master’s students from Aalborg University (Denmark), are currently doing an internship at ITMO University’s Higher School of Lighting Design. The two students are developing a new lighting design model for one of St. Petersburg’s public parks using a nature-oriented approach. They believe that the value of light as an architectural tool will only increase wherever people haven’t yet realized its importance.

• Arizona University Expert: Why People Don’t Want to Learn Foreign Languages

  People all over the world are still reluctant to learn new languages – even English, which is commonly seen as the new global language. We spoke about this topic with Robert Cote, Director of the Writing Skills Improvement Program at the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University for the ESP Conference. Robert explained why no one can ever fully learn a language, why it’s important to start soon and why language learning can never work without tutors and group work.
