  • Some Like It Cold: ITMO Experts Talk Latest in Cryogenics

It’s a scorcher outside! Just the right time to think about the cold. And for a good reason: liquid helium, commonly used as a refrigerant, was first produced on July 10, 1908 by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, a Dutch physicist who earned a Nobel Prize in 1913 for this discovery. Igor Baranov, head of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, and Oleg Pakhomov, an associate professor at the Faculty of Energy and Ecotechnology, joined us to talk about cryogenic technologies and the latest advances in the field.

  • ITMO Scientists Discover Nonlinear Circular Dichroism in Mie-Resonant Nanoparticle Dimers

The discovered effect may potentially be used to create special sensors for chiral molecules. These molecules are particularly useful to the pharmaceutical industry, but have a unique structure that makes them difficult to detect. The related article was published in Nano Letters.

  • Cutting Perovskite: Scientists Succeed in Shaping Microscopic Monocrystals Without Loss of Quality

A research team that includes staff members of ITMO University has suggested a new method of processing miniature perovskite fragments. The method is cheap and makes it possible to fashion microcrystals into desired shapes for use in production of lenses and other optoelectronic elements. This will help bring about the material’s widespread adoption within the industry. A paper on the research was published in Laser & Photonics Reviews.

  • New Research Highlights History and Importance of Preserving the Lesser-Known Chinese Mountain Cat

We know that the domestic cat has distant relatives that roam the earth – lions, tigers, cheetahs, and mountain lions. Less familiar are the 38 distinct species in the family Felidae, many with strange names like Pampas cat, kodkod and rusty-spotted cat. The new field of genomics – which engages in the unravelling of DNA genomes of separate species – is resolving old conundrums and revealing new secrets across the history of evolutionarily related species among cats, dogs, bears, and ourselves. Recently, an international research team that includes genetic researchers from ITMO University has completed a study that revealed several fascinating facts about the Chinese mountain cat. The paper on the study was published in Science Advances.

  • Russian Scientists Demonstrate Perfect Light Absorption by Single Nanoparticle

In the future, this discovery will be helpful in the development of new technologies for wireless transfer of energy and data. The research was carried out by scientists from ITMO University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). The paper was published in Laser & Photonics Reviews.

  • Scientists Make Quantum Germanium “Islands” Glow With Hundredfold Intensity

A team of Russian scientists including researchers from ITMO University, A.M. Prokhorov General Physics Institute, the Institute for Physics of Microstructures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, and Lomonosov Moscow State University succeeded in enhancing the luminance of quantum dots on a silicon substrate. The methods used by the scientists can help create next generation microchips that will receive and transfer information from a computer to a fiber-optic network a lot faster. The article was published in Laser & Photonics Review.

  • ITMO Scientists on Developing Laser Brush for Drawing on Metallic Surfaces

With this non-paint brush of over 20 colors and shades, artists may no longer need to be afraid of uneven lines or inadequate palettes. All missteps can be easily erased or repainted with no risk of ruining a picture. The first prototype of the laser brush should see the light of day by the end of summer. In the meantime, the researchers have published an article describing the very technology of laser miniature painting on metallic surfaces.
