Everybody Wants a Piece of the Pie: Why Universities Need to Create and Support Innovation
One day – and that day might come very soon – the Earth’s resources will run out, its population will exceed 10 billion and people need to innovate to sustain development. Issues will begin to emerge that can’t be dealt with without innovative solutions. Even today, humanity encounters problems that can’t be solved by conventional methods. Universities become sources of ideas – but how can these ideas be commercialized? How to find investors to support the process of innovation? How do universities retain their scientists and how can scientists get rid of the obstacles on their path to discovery? These were the topics of discussion at an open seminar at ITMO University, given by Professor Manijeh Reyhani – a researcher at the Centre for Entrepreneurial Management and Innovation (CEMI) at the University of Western Australia who has received her PhD in Materials Engineering and a Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) in the area of research innovation and commercialization.

Visiting Scientist Silvio Hrabar: Why It’s Important to Find New Uses for Old Discoveries
Being a scientist doesn’t just mean going to work – it means enjoying one’s work and turning it into a lifestyle, says Silvio Hrabar, ITMO University’s visiting scientist from University of Zagreb. He is conducting research into so-called “active” metamaterials which could provide a method of removing the physical limits of metamaterials. After all, these limits are the main reason why it’s so difficult to find an application for this technology. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Silvio Hrabar shared his thoughts on how this could be achieved, what should inspire a scientist and what are the advantages of bringing together physicists and mathematicians to study metamaterials.

ITMO's FutureTechnologies Accelerator - New Projects
The fourth selection round of startups for ITMO's FutureTechnologies accelerator ended in choosing 16 of the best IT, science-driven and hardware projects. With each year, the accelerator’s range of projects widens. At first, there was a separate program for IT projects, and only hardware projects were included. “People Need You!” Contest: Social Entrepreneurship for Children
Schoolchildren’s contest of social projects “People Need You!” was held for the second time in St. Petersburg, organized by ITMO University. For three months the children acquired skills in management, PR-communication, networking and partner scouting and other abilities that are necessary to successfully complete a project. This year the students turned their attention to the issues of ecology, information security, children’s street safety and addressed the issue of cultural and historical education of youth.

ITMO and Finland's XAMK University Strengthen Relationship
Head of School of Translational Information Technologies and of ITMO University’s eScience Research Institute Alexander Boukhanovsky and the Rector of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) Heikki Saastamoinen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The first step of this new partnership will be the staging of an International Young Scientists Conference. This year the event that will gather the leading experts on high-performance computing and simulation will take place at XAMK’s campus in the town of Kotka.
