Nanotech From Birth: How Future Engineers Are Made at ITMO’s “Quantoriums”.
Some of ITMO University’s staff has become a federal tutor in a childrens’ extracurricular education program organized by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives. The university and the agency have paired up to create the ITMO Nanoquantum program. The university will train tutors who will teach at “Quantoriums” – children’s technoparks that will soon open all over the country. They are intended to serve as a modern version of the “Palaces of the Pioneers” from the olden days where children were brought up as future engineers and inventors. The students at “Quantoriums” will be able to choose among 13 fields of study that correspond to Russia’s scientific and technological priorities of the next 20 to 30 years.

Training Future Scientists at Summer School
Twenty students attended the summer school for young biotechnologists, ecologists and engineers. The program was aimed at high school students from grades 7 to 11. It gave students a chance to become familiar with the work of the School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems at ITMO University in order to help them choose their future field of study. Over a period of six days, the participants of the course got to know more about what kinds of tools and equipment are used in each department.

Battle of the Capitals: St. Petersburg Takes Home the Prize
The first-ever Tournament for Two Capitals in robotics, held in Moscow, culminated in a grand relay race that combined elements of all the tasks from previous stages of the competition. In a tense, but joyful race the select team from St. Petersburg gained victory. Over the course of the tournament, the children learned not only how to solve engineering and software issues on the spot, but also how to work in a team, support each other and root for others, even their rivals. The aspiring robot builders were supported by their trainers, who were just as anxious about the outcome as the players themselves and their families and friends.

“People Need You!” Contest: Social Entrepreneurship for Children
Schoolchildren’s contest of social projects “People Need You!” was held for the second time in St. Petersburg, organized by ITMO University. For three months the children acquired skills in management, PR-communication, networking and partner scouting and other abilities that are necessary to successfully complete a project. This year the students turned their attention to the issues of ecology, information security, children’s street safety and addressed the issue of cultural and historical education of youth.
