• ITMO and Partners Announce Contest for Biotechnology Specialists and Their Teams

  Designed to support high technology research, the competition launched by ITMO’s SCAMT Institute in partnership with Almetyevsk State Oil Institute and the oil-and-gas company Tatneft will allow skilled principal investigators (PIs) to start their own teams and conduct biotechnology research at the biotech center in Almetyevsk. • ITMO Student Zakhar Yakovlev on His Record-Breaking Contest Win

  An awards ceremony for the winners of the national student contest I Am a Professional has recently taken place in Moscow. The star of the event was Zakhar Yakovlev, a fourth-year student at ITMO’s School of Physics and Engineering, who became a runner-up in seven categories and a winner in two more, becoming the contest’s all-time record holder. ITMO.NEWS talked to Zakhar to learn more about what helped him win and what he learned from his contest experience.

• SPIEF 2022: ITMO Students Among Finalists of International Cyberdrills

  The team from ITMO’s Faculty of Secure Information Technologies repelled all attacks during international cyberdrills that took place at St. Petersburg Economic Forum (SPIEF). Their task was to respond to a cyberattack on the city’s power grid and prevent a blackout. Students and cybersecurity specialists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Syria, Pakistan, and Vietnam took part.

• ITMO in Top 3 of I am a Professional Contest’s Medal Count

  ITMO University placed second in the medal count of the fifth season of the national student competition I am a Professional, as was announced on May 31 after the competition’s wrap-up. The university’s students got 11 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze awards, 27 in total. This has become the first time ITMO got into the top 3 of the participating universities.

• ITMO Youth Robotics Team Wins RoboCup Russia Open 2022

  The team of ITMO’s Youth Robotics Lab became first in the RCJ OnStage category among school students aged 14-19 at the national round of RoboCup 2022. At the contest, the team Simple Dimple presented their musical robots who performed Caprice No. 24 by Niccolò Paganini and Kalinka Malinka by Ivan Larionov. The show featured a robot (playing the balalaika), one of the team members (playing the dombra), and robot matryoshkas as their backup dancers.

• The Results of Ethical Hacking Competition for School Students

  ITMO’s International Scientific and Academic Center "Security and Safety for Critical Digital Technologies" has recently held Neva CTF – a competition in information security among school students. This year, the contest brought together 28 teams from 21 schools in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

• From Physics to Dancing: How ITMO Students Design Their Own Optional Courses

  Not only the university’s lecturers but also students can now share their knowledge and experience with others thanks to the Students for Students initiative. The idea for this project was born last fall. The project participants have spent two and a half months developing their own courses under the guidance of experienced mentors and held their first classes already in April. ITMO.NEWS talked to the participants to learn more about their projects, how they were created, and why they can be beneficial for both students and lecturers.

• ITMO.EduStars Winner and ICPC Star Coach Andrey Stankevich on Finding His Calling

  Andrey Stankevich got into programming when he was still in school; in the 90s, before he even had his own computer, he already read computer science books and took computer classes. As a student at ITMO, he twice became the winner of ICPC, the world’s most prestigious programming competition. After graduating and becoming a lecturer, he took up coaching. Under his leadership, ITMO University’s team became the world’s only seven-time ICPC champion. We spoke to Andrey to find out about the differences between academic teaching and coaching, getting students to engage with complex topics, and why teaching is more than a vocation.

• ITMO Team Shines at SPbSUT Competition in Information Security

  ITMO University’s students claimed first place in a cybersecurity contest organized by St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications (SPbSUT). All in all, 26 teams from the Northwestern Federal District participated in the competition. Having scored 96 out of 100, the ITMO team is now to compete at the national competition OpenBonch 2022 planned for this fall.
