• First in Russia AI School Paper Checker Developed at ITMO

  ITMO researchers have designed a neural network for processing the results of the national tests performed by school students. The algorithm will reduce the processing time by 20 times and free teachers from routine tasks. The service is currently being tested at three schools in St. Petersburg – and will potentially be implemented all across Russia. This is the first AI-powered technology of this scale in Russia.

• ITMO Launches Institute of Applied Mathematics

• AI Tool to Facilitate Mineral Processing Developed at ITMO

  Students of ITMO’s Computer Technologies Laboratory have created a series of AI models for processing of clumped texture images. AI models tend to have a hard time “seeing” the borders of objects – for instance, telling one type of mineral from another – but now they can label 600 images in an hour. The new open-source solution can be used to measure the size and distribution of various objects (granulometry) in a variety of fields: examples include precious and colored metals in mining, granular materials and crystals in food or agricultural industries, as well as oil refining.

• Russian Scientists’ Solution Promises to Improve Logistics in Big Cities

  Researchers from Sberbank’s Artificial Intelligence Lab and ITMO University have found a way to improve logistics in major cities. Their discovery may help improve the efficiency of cargo traffic, delivery and taxi services, and public transport. The resulting paper, Assessing the complexity of a path search optimization method based on clustering for a transport graph, was published in the Q1 journal EPJ Data Science.

• ITMO to Receive 350 Million Rubles for Educational Programs in AI

  In a competition conducted by the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media and the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation, ITMO was named among the top Russian universities that will be training highly qualified AI specialists in 2025-2030. Winners will receive funding within the national project Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the Country.

• Automate Your Coding with OSA – ITMO-Made AI Assistant for Researchers

  The recently unveiled Open Source Advisor (OSA) is an LLM-based tool that can “tidy up” open-source research code repositories to make them more accessible to other research teams. Developed by the staff of ITMO University, OSA can help replicate experiments or launch algorithms described in publications. By facilitating the systematization of research data, the tool increases the value of scientific papers. OSA will be equally beneficial to coders and to those wishing to make sense of data acquired by other research teams.

• ITMO Students Succeed at Data Fusion Contest

  A team of ITMO students from the Artificial Intelligence Technologies Faculty made it into the top three of Data Fusion Contest, an international competition for data scientists organized by the IT holding company T1 in collaboration with VTB Bank. Over 1,500 participants from Russia, Australia, Germany, the USA, and other countries participated in the event. The winners were awarded at the Lomonosov cluster in Moscow as part of the conference Data Fusion 2025.

• Rose or White: ITMO Researchers’ New Algorithm Uses Bubbles to Gauge Wine Quality and Glass Type

  Scientists at ITMO University have developed a method of assessing the type of sparkling wine with 84% accuracy – and the type of wine glass with 82% accuracy. The researchers were the first to use machine learning in order to analyze wine based on the shape and size of bubbles caused by ultrasound. This invention will be helpful in providing automated, quick, and inexpensive quality control in industrial and lab conditions. The results of the study were published in RSC Advances and supported by grant No. FSER-2024-0003 of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
