  • Portable Lab: ITMO Master’s Student On Developing a New Chemiluminescence Sensor

    A research group headed by Ksenia Kirichek has won a grant in the competition of practice-oriented R&D projects to develop a chemiluminescence sensor. The device will help detect early stages of heart attacks, diabetes and oxidative stress.   • Over Twenty ITMO University Students Win Potanin Scholarship Contest

    The Vladimir Potanin Foundation Scholarship Program is aimed at helping talented Master’s students of Russian universities. The selection of the grantees took place in two rounds: an offsite and an onsite one. First, the candidates submitted their resumes and a detailed description of their accomplishments, and in the second round, they participated in business games based on the results of which the judges issued a final ranking. In 2020, 500 out of 3,000 candidates were chosen to become the scholarship’s recipients throughout their Master’s; 27 of them are ITMO University students. ITMO.NEWS spoke to several of them to find out what helped them win and what advice they would give to future Master’s students gearing up to participate in the competition.

  • ITMO University Hosts Potanin Scholarship Contest Finals

    The on-site round of the Potanin scholarship contest for Master’s students was held in eight Russian cities between January 22 and February 10. The organizers usually keep the tasks of the on-site round secret, but their format is known to be not unlike that of business simulation games and case competitions. We asked representatives of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation about the aims of the contest and the qualities of a perfect candidate. The candidates themselves told us what motivated them to take part in the competition and the tasks they had to solve during the on-site round.

  • ITMO Scientists Help School Team Win ICCET 2019

    Seven teams became winners of the International Contest of Engineering Teams “Kvantoriada 2019” (ICCET 2019) that took place in Moscow at the end of last year. Among them was the team Quantum from Astrakhan who got help from the scientists of ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering in the development of their prototype.   • ICPC-2020 World Finals Participants Announced in St. Petersburg

    The results of the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) semifinals were announced on December 1. Over 100 student teams from the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Belarus and the Baltic states solved problems competing for the right to take part in the finals of the biggest programming contest in the world, which will take place in Moscow on June 26, 2020. The team from St. Petersburg State University was the absolute winner of the semifinals, with ITMO University’s team also coming away with gold medals.

  • ITMO Student Wins in Special Nomination of Huawei Honor Cup

    Lena Ilyina is a third-year student at ITMO University’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. In the future, she sees herself as a developer, but it so happened that her participation in the Huawei Honor Cup contest was as part of the nomination “PR (ICT Observer)”. All the more notably, her participation brought her victory. ITMO.NEWS met Lena to talk about how she came across the competition, what it brought her to discover and what plans for her career she envisages now.

  • Total Dictation and ITMO’s Center of Science Communication Launch a Contest of PopSci Works

    The team of the Total Dictation initiative is launching a new contest for authors of popular-science works on Russian language and literature. Journalists and bloggers who explore topics close to those of Total Dictation, are invited to participate, as well as specialists in the field of science and science communication who are interested in the popularization of the Russian language. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Ilya Stakheev, deputy director of the Science Communication Center at ITMO University and one of the founders of Total Dictation, to find out about the contest’s rules and why participating in it may be interesting not only to journalists and philologists.

  • Open Doors Competition for Tuition-Free Master’s Studies in Russia: ITMO to Coordinate Computer & Data Science Track

    The organizing committee of the Open Doors international competition has announced the start of the qualification round, which is a portfolio contest, for international prospective Master’s students wanting to study in Russia. 2019 will be the third year that the competition has been hosted. ITMO.NEWS met with Polina Petrusha, Advisor to First Vice Rector, to find out how many winners of last year’s Open Doors enrolled at ITMO, what is needed to pass the portfolio round, and how this year’s competition will differ from the previous ones.

  • ITMO University Team Wins NordCTF With More Points Than All Other Contestants Put Together

    The final of the regional NordCTF cyber security contest took place in the St. Petersburg “Boiling Point” center. ITMO University team has managed to finish first with a fourfold margin. Our correspondent observed the competition and was lucky enough to talk to its hosts about computer forensics, hacker footprint tracking methods and the fate of the current winners.
