Wastebake Project: Smart Recycling
EuroTransBio (ETB) is an international funding initiative that encourages European companies and research centers to conduct research in the field of modern biotechnology. ITMO University together with partners from Italy and Finland received funding from ETB for a project on biotechnological functionalization of bakery waste. What is special about this project is that it is beneficial for all three participating countries. ITMO.NEWS asked Denis Baranenko, head of the International Research Center “Biotechnologies of the Third Millennium”, about how to produce innovative food and medical ingredients from discarded stale bread.

Academic Mobility: Studying Biotechnology at Sup Biotech Paris
Aleksandra Predeina, Alena Moiseenko and Elena Panasuk, students at ITMO’s Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, spent the last semester at Sup’Biotech Paris - a French private school that focuses on training specialists in different fields of biotechnology, from aesthetic medicine to pharmaceutics and agricultural production. In the course of several months, not only did they get to familiarize themselves with new fields, but develop several projects, as well. For instance, they’ve proposed the concept of protective gear for sportsmen and come up with a solution for the food crisis we’ll be facing in 2050 when Earth’s population will amount to 9 billion. In an interview for ITMO news, they talked about the peculiarities of studying and living in France.

ITMO’s Technopark Resident Company Takes Best BioTech Innovations Prize in Hong Kong.
The ATG Service Gene, company-resident at ITMO’s Technopark won in the category "Best Innovations" in the field of biotechnology at the SmartBizExpo in Hong Kong. In addition, the company won three gold medals in pharmacology. Ilya Dukhovlinov, Director of Science at ATG Service Gene told ITMO.NEWS about the most memorable moments and the generous Hong Kong investors.

Danfoss Training Center Opens At ITMO University
The Danfoss Company has recently opened a training center on refrigeration technology at ITMO University. Students of three program tracks will have the opportunity to hone their practical skills on modern refrigeration equipment, conduct lab work and learn about the relevant trends in the industry. The center will also hold workshops for specialists from different companies.

ITMO's Technopark Establishes Cooperation with a Major Food Production Company
Resident's of ITMO Technopark and the university's research teams presented their research and inventions at Atria Russia's production plant in Gorelovo. Members of the university's delegation acquainted themselves with the technologies used by the company and discussed potential collaboration projects, including new methods of tagging raw materials and tracking their consumption, inspection of meat product contamination, as well as the use of functional blends.

Wild Potato for the Welfare of Cultivated Vegetables
Mechanisms of interaction between microorganisms and plants, for instance, symbiosis of bacteria and vegetables, are a poorly researched field. Making a breakthrough can lead to new technologies of food storage. FoodTech-2050: Introducing Technologies to Food Industry
By 2050, the Earth's populace will amount to 9.6 billion people. Protein-based food consumption will increase due to the economic growthof underdeveloped countries. Life expectancy will increase, so people will need specific foods — like foods with special balancers. Yet, even now there are lots of problems in the food industry — ones that have to do with manufacturing, shipment, storage. These were discussed during the Foodnet foresight session that was part of the Import Substitution in Food Industry Week organized by ITMO University.
