• Physicist Maxim Gorlach on getting ahead in science: "The worst scenario is to just drift with the tide".

  Four years ago, a researcher at the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, Maxim Gorlach, decided to move from Minsk (Belarus) to St. Petersburg to enter a Ph.D. program at  ITMO University and study metamaterials as part of Pavel Belov's research group. Since then, not only did he manage to join in on a new field of research, but also work in the US and Australia, defend his Ph.D. thesis and win a grant from the Russian Science Foundation together with his colleagues. He told ITMO.NEWS about what dividends does doing research give, why the academic competitions can become a real social elevator for a high school or university student and how to not miss the opportunities for personal development while being a university student.

• ITMO Scientists Receive Russian Science Foundation Grants

  According to the results of the first three rounds of the Presidential research funding program, 504 pilot projects, 239 youth research teams and 31 laboratories have been awarded grants. Many of ITMO University’s scientists are among them. The winners’ projects are based on various fields of study: from smart city development scenarios to the creation of dielectric metamaterials with unique properties.

• Probability Waves Could Be Used as “Tractor Beams” to Control Nanoobjects

  Tractor beams first became a topic of conversation two centuries ago in science fiction: the term implied a beam of light that could lift and move various objects. It is commonly associated with aliens pulling objects from Earth aboard their flying saucers. An idea that seemed improbable some decades ago has become real: scientists all over the world are coming up with ways of moving objects. Although, for now, these “tractor beams” can only move nanoparticles. An international research group that includes a scientist from ITMO University has contributed to this field of study: they have proven that de Broglie waves (probability waves), which in quantum mechanics denote a matter wave, are also capable of displaying the properties of a tractor beam.

  The Second Nanophotonics and Metamaterials International Doctoral Summer Schoolhas just ended at ITMO University. According to its participants, the school offered a great opportunity to learn about the recent achievements in the field. For almosta week, they listened to lectures by scientists from leading research teams, conducted project work and got a whole lot of new ideas and useful contacts to work with.
