Mining Hardware Helps Scientists Gain Insight into Silicon Nanoparticles
Researchers from ITMO University and their international colleagues have developed the first three-dimensional dynamic model of an interaction between light and silicon nanoparticles. They used a supercomputer with graphic accelerators for the calculations. Results showed that when exposed to short, intense laser pulses, silicon particles temporarily lose their symmetry and their optical properties become strongly heterogeneous. Such a change in properties depends on particle size; therefore it can be used to control light at nanoscale and in ultrafast information processing devices. The study was published in Advanced Optical Materials.

METANANO-2018 Conference: How to Participate and What to Expect
The International Conference on Metamaterials and Nanophotonics METANANO 2018 will be held for the third time on September 17-21 in Sochi. Scientists from all around the world will come together to discuss the latest scientific discoveries and achievements; approximately half of the event’s guests will come from foreign universities and research centers. The METANANO conference is becoming increasingly popular due to its large scientific scope. This leads to more interdisciplinary research and, therefore, more practical applications are made for theoretical inventions.

ITMO Begins Research on Carbon Nanodot Synthesis Methods
The Russian Government has awarded Professor Andrey Rogach and ITMO University’s International Research and Education Center for Physics of Nanostructures with a “megagrant*” to facilitate the creation of the Laboratory “Light-emitting Carbon Quantum Nanostructures”. There, scientists will study new methods for synthesis of carbon nanodots, which are expected to find use in LEDs and for the purpose of biomedical sensing, i.e. the analysis of chemical substances in living tissue. These new eco-friendly structures will greatly fit into today’s popular “green” nanophotonics concept

Physicist Maxim Gorlach on getting ahead in science: "The worst scenario is to just drift with the tide".
Four years ago, a researcher at the Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, Maxim Gorlach, decided to move from Minsk (Belarus) to St. Petersburg to enter a Ph.D. program at ITMO University and study metamaterials as part of Pavel Belov's research group. Since then, not only did he manage to join in on a new field of research, but also work in the US and Australia, defend his Ph.D. thesis and win a grant from the Russian Science Foundation together with his colleagues. He told ITMO.NEWS about what dividends does doing research give, why the academic competitions can become a real social elevator for a high school or university student and how to not miss the opportunities for personal development while being a university student.

Probability Waves Could Be Used as “Tractor Beams” to Control Nanoobjects
Tractor beams first became a topic of conversation two centuries ago in science fiction: the term implied a beam of light that could lift and move various objects. It is commonly associated with aliens pulling objects from Earth aboard their flying saucers. An idea that seemed improbable some decades ago has become real: scientists all over the world are coming up with ways of moving objects. Although, for now, these “tractor beams” can only move nanoparticles. An international research group that includes a scientist from ITMO University has contributed to this field of study: they have proven that de Broglie waves (probability waves), which in quantum mechanics denote a matter wave, are also capable of displaying the properties of a tractor beam.
