• Yandex.Eats Data Leak: Reasons, Ramifications, and Security Tips

  A few days ago, Yandex.Eats, a food delivery app by Yandex, suffered a data leak – a map of its users’ personal data (including names, phone numbers, addresses, and expenses over a period of six months) was published online. The company admitted that personal data of some users leaked on March 1 but stressed that this was an isolated incident. These days, any major IT business faces the threat of data leaks – on the online black market, there are even specific price ranges for user data from different services. We asked ITMO’s Dmitry Tatarov, an engineer at the Faculty of Secure Information Technologies, how companies can protect their data and what users should do if they find their personal data online.

  The VUZPROMEXPO, a national convention on the subject of science and education, kicked off in Sochi on December 8 and will continue until the 10th. Russian scientists, university higher-ups, and representatives of business and the government met at the Sirius Park of Science and Art to discuss collaboration, showcase their achievements, and sum up the year’s results. One of the first day’s most notable discussions, titled How Technologies Will Change Higher Education, was moderated by Daria Kozlova, the First Vice Rector of ITMO University and the head of its 2030 Development Strategy.

• Free Yandex Subscription for First-Year ITMO Students

  Yandex is one of the partner companies of ITMO University, where our students can do their practical training. However, first-year students who only started studying at ITMO also have another opportunity provided by Yandex: the company offers them a free subscription to Yandex Plus. The service is mostly available in Russian but also includes lots of content in English and overall is a great tool for getting to know the Russian language and culture.

  On September 7, Yandex presented a new tool – automatized voice-over translation of English videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, and other websites into Russian. It’s available through Yandex.Browser, which allows it to work with videos posted on any website.
