    Mamadi Berete comes from Guinea, a west-coastal country in West Africa. The country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from other countries with "Guinea" in the name. Guinea has a population of 12.4 million. He is currently getting his Bachelor’s degree in Info-Communications Systems Programming.

  • ITMO Graduate and UbiQD’s Senior Director of Physics Nikolay Makarov: A Scientist’s Interests Must Always Be In Flux

    Nikolay Makarov was a student at ITMO University in the late ‘90s to early ‘00s. In that time, his scientific interests shifted from programming to experimental physics. His work caught the attention of an American university, where he eventually got his PhD. Since then, Nikolay has lived in the US, having worked at various universities, research institutes, and even at the Los Alamos National Lab. Today, he works at UbiQD, a private manufacturer of quantum dots. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Nikolay and learned about his story, why young scientists don’t stick around for long at American universities, and the prospects of US-Russian scientific collaboration.

  • School Students from All Over Russia and Belarus Take Part in the Congress of Young Scientists

    The Congress of Young Scientists took place on April 15-18 at ITMO University. This year, school and university students presented their research online. Ten sections for school students were attended by 118 participants from 34 cities all over Russia and Belarus. Their young age didn’t stop the participants from conducting real scientific research with the help of their advisors. We asked some of the students what their projects are about, how they liked the online format, and what they want to work on in future.

  • “I Did It Because I Could”: ITMO Alumnus Donates 800 Respirators to St. Petersburg Hospital, Buys Laptops for School Students

    In early April, the coronavirus epidemic caused schools in St. Petersburg to adopt a distance learning format. It became clear then that some 17,000 school students had no access to devices that would let them continue studying from home. Maksim Gavrilov, an ITMO University graduate, responded to the call to help students from low-income families by purchasing 54 computers. Before that, he donated over 800 respirators to the St. Petersburg Hospital №2. His own explanation is simply that he could help. We got in touch with Maksim for a chat about solidarity in times of the pandemic, his times at ITMO, his business, and how to maintain a proper workday in self-isolation.

  • ITMO University and Yandex Launch New Master’s Program in Data Analytics

    ITMO University and Yandex will start training data analysis specialists. The Master’s program in Data Analytics is set to launch in the new academic year, but applications are already open.   • 10th Birthday of International Sports Programming Project Codeforces Celebrated at ITMO University

    Codeforces, one of the most famous competitive programming platforms in the world, has celebrated its tenth birthday. It was created by then Saratov State University lecturer Mikhail Mirzayanov at the end of the 2000s as an online community for people who like to solve programming tasks. Now Mikhail works at ITMO University, which is a second home for Codeforces. ITMO.NEWS attended the celebration party and asked its participants how Codeforces had influenced their life and the entire community.
