• ITMO and NTU to Collaborate on Academic Mobility Programs

  ITMO University was recently visited by a delegation from Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The main topic of the conversation between the two universities was the development of academic mobility programs. As of today, ITMO and NTU are already working together on research in predictive modeling and translational technology. In near future, the partners intend to strengthen their partnership in the area of student mobility.

• International Research Team Makes Progress in HRS Virus Study

  An international research team that includes scientists from ITMO University has come closer to understanding the structure of the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) which affects thousands every year. The reserachers have partially mapped out the three-dimensional structure of the NS1 protein contained in HRSV and identified the structural parts responsible for the suppression of the human immune system. The results of the study have been published in the Nature Microbiology journal.

• ITMO Scientists Receive Russian Science Foundation Grants

  According to the results of the first three rounds of the Presidential research funding program, 504 pilot projects, 239 youth research teams and 31 laboratories have been awarded grants. Many of ITMO University’s scientists are among them. The winners’ projects are based on various fields of study: from smart city development scenarios to the creation of dielectric metamaterials with unique properties.

• Forming Bonds: Visiting Scientists on Chemistry Research and Working Abroad

  Two young extraordinary scientists with extensive international experience – a chemist and a materials science engineer – came to ITMO to conduct research for a few months. They currently work in the Hey-Hawkins Group at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at Leipzig University. Sara Durini is a postdoc from Italy and Rafaella Precker is a Ph.D. student from Brazil. They both took part in research at the Solutions Chemistry of Advanced Materials and Technologies (SCAMT) Laboratory at ITMO. The international news portal had an exclusive interview with them to learn more about their research.

• Do Leadership Skills Depend on Education: Research By ITMO And Courseburg.ru

  ​Educational online platform Courseburg.ru and ITMO's Institute of Design & Urban Studies conducted a joint research and found out what education do St. Petersburg's top-managers have and how that affects their careers. • ITMO Scientists Develop New Protective Pipeline Coating

  For several months a scientific team from ITMO University collaborated with scientists from the science division of JSC “Kronos SPb” on the creation of a new coating type intended to protect oil and gas pipelines from corrosion. The resulting coating meets all of the modern requirements and retains its protective properties under high temperatures. Evgenia Guseva, a postgraduate student at ITMO University’s Department of IT in the Fuel and Energy Industry and one of the creators of this material, spoke to ITMO.NEWS about what makes this new coating stand out among its existing counterparts on the market.

• Youth in Science: Summer Internship in Photonics and Optical IT

  The Summer Internship has begun at ITMO University’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies. For two weeks, tenth-graders will acquaint themselves with the latest research in the fields of quantum information, biomedicine, femtosecond optics and other innovative sciences. The high-schoolers will work with scientists on actual research, start their own project and will soon be able to take part in prestigious conferences for experts in photonics and optical IT. • Chemoinformatics in ITMO: From Individual Projects to A University of Strasbourg Diploma

  Last year ITMO University launched a new Master's Degree program - Chemoinformatics and Molecular Modeling. There are few such programs in Russia - those that train specialists who will work in modern pharmacology and deal with such things as computer-aided drug design, predicting of compounds' properties and working with new materials on a molecular level. ITMO conducts its program in collaboration with the University of Strasbourg, and its best graduates can continue their education in France and get a University of Strasbourg diploma as well as ITMO's one. Yuri Prozorov, Head of the International Laboratory of Structural Bioinformatics, shared about the new program and why intelligent analysis of chemical data becomes more and more popular.

• New Metamaterial-Enhanced MRI Technology Successfully Tested on Human Subjects

  Scientists from the Netherlands and Russia designed and tested a new metasurface-based technology for enhancing the local sensitivity of MRI scanners on human test subjects for the first time. The metasurface consists of thin resonant strips arranged periodically. Placed under a patient's head, it provides much higher image quality from the local brain region. The results, published in Scientific Reports, show that the use of metasurfaces can potentially reduce image acquisition time, make the procedure more comfortable for patients and acquire higher resolution images to allow diseases to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.

  The Second Nanophotonics and Metamaterials International Doctoral Summer Schoolhas just ended at ITMO University.
